The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have only had Jameis Winston on the roster for three days now, but rumors indicate that the team is already upset with the Florida State quarterback with a history of questionable behavior.
Sources had indicated that the Bucs were in love with Winston and never considered anything else with the draft’s top pick, but that apparently isn’t stopping the team from laying down the law with their new quarterback.
After he was picked first in the 2015 NFL Draft, Winston decided to poke fun at some of his legal troubles during his college years, posting a picture of himself in front of a big plate of crab legs. For those who don’t remember, Winston was arrested for shoplifting crab legs during his time at Florida State.
Jameis Winston quickly took down the picture, and later explained that it was a distraction.
“That’s the only reason why I took the picture down,” Winston said. “I didn’t want any negative publicity for this day, because that took it away from this whole organization and my family. I just never would’ve expected that.”
While Jameis Winston seemed to want to put the incident — and the picture — behind him, it didn’t turn out that way. The crab legs picture was a big topic of discussion at Winston’s first press conference with the team.
Winston tried to steer the topic back to football, but it was clear his poor decision was a major story.
Rumors also began circulating that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the ones who pressured Jameis to take the picture down, but the team’s general manager Jason Licht said that wasn’t true.
“The world knows and Tampa definitely knows that Jameis loves crab legs,” Licht said with a chuckle.
To many, the crab legs picture encapsulated the worries a number of teams had about Jameis Winston. While he is considered a top prospect with all the tools to become a franchise quarterback, Winston’s maturity and decision-making skills have come under question after a series of run-ins with the law and trouble on campus.
Whether the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rumors are true or not, Jameis Winston will be able to make up for it quickly. The team is holding a rookie mini-camp in the next week, and Winston is expected to be stepping in as starting quarterback right away.
