The Floyd “Money” Mayweather vs. Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao fight is one of the most anticipated boxing matches in modern history. Fans have been clamoring for the matchup between Floyd and Manny for years. Now, the fight is mere hours away.
And so is the inevitable disappointment.

I’m not saying it’s not going to be a good fight. It’s probably going to feel like the private Apollo vs. Rocky matchup at the end of Rocky III that the audience was deprived of. A “what if” question answered at long last. That sense of relief that comes with knowing the proposed outcome of the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight may be enough. However, there are a few reasons, concerns even, that have prevented me from being swept up in the excitement of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight.
Consider the ages of both men involved. Floyd is two years shy of 40. Manny is a couple of years younger, which might lend him the smallest of advantages. But I am not going to pretend that these men didn’t linger beyond their prime before finally making the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao match a reality. If this match were to have occurred several years ago, I would probably be far more inclined to care. As we will not be getting the best from these two men, two very wealthy and a bit too seasoned boxers, why should I anticipate the match of the century?

Speaking of “wealthy”, did you know that Floyd Mayweather will reportedly earn $5 million per minute? The fight is said to be worth a couple of hundred million dollars; this means that both men will walk away with hefty paychecks regardless of the outcome. With the money already made, am I really supposed to believe that ego alone is going to drive both fighters to give their all where there’s little risk and high reward?
For those of you who are betting money on this fight, there are the increasing nerves of Vegas oddsmakers over the very strong possibility of a draw. Apparently odds of this outcome dropped from 18-1 to 8-1. Even though odds currently favor Pacquiao to win over Mayweather, this outcome is something that many have not considered: The two fighters trolling the entire world and making themselves very rich in the process.
Do these two men seem ready to retire? If not, it doesn’t make sense for men to put themselves through the ringer and acquire injuries that will take much longer to heal at this stage of their career. It all comes back to age, risk, and reward. Floyd and Manny are simply too old to give people the show they expect and are no longer hungry enough to try.

Boxing fans who are telling themselves how great this fight will be are basing these feelings entirely on fantasy and not on reality. I’d rather keep the “what if” factor regarding Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao in their prime fantasy alive than cave and pay out money for a reality that will never measure up to the ideal.
Think I’m wrong? What are your thoughts on tonight’s Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight?
