Boston Celtics Trade Rumors: DeMarcus Cousins Becomes Trade Target For Celtics

Boston Celtics trade rumors indicate the team plans to pursue DeMarcus Cousins in the NBA offseason. These Celtics trade rumors have been creating a lot of buzz after Marc Stein wrote about it at ESPN Late Friday (May 1). He noted that when it comes to a “dream target” for the Celtics during the offseason, that Cousins is at the top of the list.

“The Celtics certainly want to make a free-agent splash this summer. No less an authority than Ainge was very clear at his farewell address that he knows he has no stars in Boston at the minute and needs to find at least one as soon as possible.”

It’s easy to understand why the Celtics would want an All-Star power forward like DeMarcus Cousins, but it isn’t a given that the team will be able to convince the Sacramento Kings to trade him. For several years now, trade rumors have circled Cousins, as the Kings struggled to put together wins during the NBA season. As the team continues to find itself in lottery pick territory each year, it only serves as more ammunition that the Kings need to rebuild without Cousins.

During the 204-15 NBA season, Cousins might have had the best season of his career. He averaged 24.1 points, 12.7 rebounds, 3.6 assits, 1.7 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game. That was all while shooting 46.7 percent from the field and 78.2 percent from the free throw line. The numbers that Cousins put up for the Kings were among the best the league has to offer, showing exactly why a team like the Celtics would love to have him in the low post.

As previously reported on the Inquisitr, DeMarcus Cousins signed a nice contract extension with the Sacramento Kings, as such, he still has three more years left on his current deal. Cousins will make an estimated $14.7 million in 2015-16, $15.8 million in 2016-17, and $16.8 million in 2017-18. Those are actually bargain numbers for the statistics that he puts up, underscoring how it could be a great contract for the Boston Celtics to acquire. Now, it just comes down to offering a package good enough that the Kings will take it.

After making it into the 2015 NBA Playoffs, the Celtics missed out on getting another lottery pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. The team will likely have the 16th selection in the first-round this year, as well as the first-round selection owned by the Los Angeles Clippers. They also have two second-round selections in 2015 and at least two picks in each round for 2016 as well. The Boston Celtics certainly have the assets to go out and get DeMarcus Cousins if the Sacramento Kings really do shop him.
