Blizzard recently announced that a major patch is on the way for StarCraft II in the near enough future, one that is perhaps the most feature-packed update to date.

According to Blizzard, StarCraft II patch 1.5 will add in a host of new improvements to the social aspect of their wildly popular RTS, all in preparation for the eventual release of StarCraft II‘s first expansion, Heart of the Swarm.

One of the most interesting additions in StarCraft II for those of us who organize custom games will be the addition of a new “Arcade” system. Blizzard game director Dustin Browder explains:

“One of the most significant additions will be the all new Arcade feature which includes improved custom game visibility, ratings, reviews, game instructions, screenshot support, and more,” Browder said. “Patch 1.5 will also include significant improvements throughout the overall user interface, streaming support, antialiasing, editor and modding upgrades, new art tools, and more.”

StarCraft II patch 1.5 already sounds big enough from that bit alone, but Blizzard isn’t stopping there with the update. In the patch, Blizzard will aim to address concerns from the fans that the social experience–chat channels and the like–isn’t quite up to par with the experience players had with the original Battle.net during the StarCraft / Brood War days.

Browder continues:

“We’ve heard concerns about the StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty social experience and many of these comments boil down to, ‘the service feels empty’ and ‘I don’t know where to go to find people.’ We have some simple fixes we’re going to put into the chat system to try to give players some additional connectivity. These aren’t huge fixes, but they may help players who want a more social experience.”
