Arizona Law Will Give Employers The Right To Fire Women Who Use Birth Control

Arizona is really outdoing themselves this time. It wasn’t enough for them to go after Hispanics and gays. Now women are going to bear the wrath of the lunatic religious right. An Arizona lawmaker is proposing that employers should have the right to ask women in their employ to provide proof that the birth control pills they are using are being used for non-sexual purposes.

The kicker is that Arizona is a Right-To-Work state, so if the employer wanted to he could then fire any employee who he feels is using the BC pills to ave safe sex.

Yesterday, a Senate Judiciary Committee endorsed Republican Debbie Lesko’s HB2625 by a vote of 6-2, which would allow an employer to request proof that a woman using insurance to buy birth control was being prescribed the birth control for reasons other than not wanting to get pregnant.

When asked why she was introducing a ridiculous bill like this one, her answer was that it is all about Freedom.

Seriously what on earth does this have to do with freedom? Employers wanting to monitor the sexual habits of their workers is about Freedom?

Further, Lesko states, with a straight face, that this bill is necessary because “we live in America; we don’t live in the Soviet Union.”

So wait a sec here, let me get this straight. America is so free. We need a law to stop a woman from getting a prescription, from a plan which she pays for, and if she does get it her boss has the right to ensure that she isn’t using it to avoid making babies and if she is using it for contraception he can fire her. Where does the freedom part come in?

The bill probably cannot hold up to Constitutional muster, but you you imagine a more depressing thought than that there are actually lunatics out there who would vote in favor of it?
