Mariah Carey’s New Single Crashes Towards ‘Infinity’ On Charts, But There Is Still Hope

Mariah Carey‘s move to Epic Records isn’t helping. Her new single “Infinity” is crashing down the iTunes Chart after just one day. The song almost hit the top 20 yesterday, but even with Mariah’s highly publicized appearance in Las Vegas last evening, the general public is, once again, ignoring her. To make things worse, the No. 33 chart position as of Tuesday afternoon is in dark pink, meaning that Carey is losing sales at a very fast pace.

Mariah Carey was hoping that “Infinity” would return her to the top of the charts. Carey’s new PR team ensured that “Infinity” would become the most hyped-up song in years. Unfortunately, hype doesn’t always equal success and one can only hope Mariah’s team has taken away her phone and computer access so she can’t watch “Infinity” fall down iTunes.

The reviews for “Infinity” have been mixed. Robbie Daw from Idolator doesn’t think much of Mariah’s latest single.

“Here are the issues: The pacing of ‘Infinity’ is set to High Snooze; it sounds easily like it could have been a leftover from last year’s pleasant yet commercially disastrous Me. I Am Mariah album; and the whole thing has way too many not-nearly-as-good echoes of Carey’s 2005 comeback smash ‘We Belong Together.’

Bianca Gracie, also from Idolator, isn’t impressed either.

“For one, the mix of the record is terrible. You would think recent career moves like signing to Epic Records would give MC more of an edge, but that apparently wasn’t the case. Her usually crystal-clear vocals are lost in the hazy production instead of being in the forefront like they’re supposed to, and her classic falsettos sound grating to the ears instead of being bird-like.”

Christopher Rosen from Entertainment Weekly thinks “Infinity” is a great throwback single and the one we have been waiting for from Mariah. Many of the commenters agree with Rosen’s assessment. As a matter of fact, “Infinity” is universally loved from Mariah’s die-hard fans, whom she refers to as her “lambs.” Some of them are upset that Carey’s new single is flopping and are making suggestions as to how “Infinity” can be a hit. Commenter Ted Lopez, who posted under a recent Mariah Carey article on Idolator, has some suggestions.

“I think she can save the song by giving away a copy of it with every seat sold for her Vegas gig. Even though that wouldn’t be many, it would still help the song chart. Perhaps she can do what she did with her other songs when they were flopping–release it for 49 cents! My prayers go out to Mariah and her team.”

Nobody should count out Mariah Carey or her single “Infinity.” Besides the possible deep discount, the video for the song, directed by Brett Ratner, could help the song climb back up the charts. Mariah Carey will always be the elusive chanteuse and should definitely be respected for finding ways to make her songs top the charts, even when they are poorly received.
