‘The Voice’ Faces Criticism Over The Return Of Judge CeeLo Green

The Voice brought judges, Usher, Gwen Stefani, and CeeLo Green back for a one-time reunion. While former judge, Shakira wasn’t able to make an appearance, she sent a sweet video message.

While there was much excitement surrounding the big event, some viewers were not happy about the return of original judge, CeeLo Green. Yahoo Music reports there were many angry tweets over the show’s decision to bring him back. Considering his controversial background, the viewer disappointment is understandable.

The ‘F**k You’ singer told Us Weekly back in 2014 he left The Voice because “it easily and quickly became a job,” claiming, “I think I ran my course there just naturally.” However, many feel the real reason he left had to do with the drug charge and rape allegation he faced just prior to his departure. Green was accused of slipping ecstasy into a 33-year-old woman’s drink before returning to her hotel in 2012. While he was never charged for the rape due to lack of evidence, he plead no contest to the drug charge. He later made things much worse by going on a shocking Twitter rant trying to defend himself.

The highly offensive tweets were quickly deleted, and he has not returned to Twitter since that time in September. He set off a firestorm with comments implying that an unconscious woman can’t be raped.

“People who have really been raped REMEMBER!!!”

“If someone is passed out they’re not even WITH you consciously! so WITH Implies consent.”

He topped it off by comparing rape to a home burglary.

“When someone brakes on a home (sic) there is broken glass where is your plausible proof anyone was raped?”

Before he disappeared from Twitter, he offered an apology, saying his comments were taken out of context.

“I sincerely apologize for my comments being taken so far out of context. I only intended on a healthy exchange to help heal those who love me from the pain I had already caused from this. Please forgive me as it was your support that got me thru this to begin with. I’d never condone the harm of any women. Thank you.”

The 40-year-old singer-songwriter-producer was ordered to serve 3 years probation, 360 hours of community service, and to attend several Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous classes for a felony drug charge. He insisted he was innocent of all charges throughout the ordeal.

Do you think it was poor judgement for The Voice to bring CeeLo Green back?

Tune in tonight at 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET on NBC to see which Voice hopeful goes home.
