Elizabeth Olsen Adds Another Kick-Ass Female To ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’ With Scarlet Witch

With the opening of Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, Scarlet Witch, aka Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen), officially joins the Avengers with her twin brother Pietro, better known as Quicksilver (Aaron Taylor-Johnson).

Audiences first caught a glimpse of the pair in a mid-credits scene with Thomas Kretschmann’s Baron von Strucker. In the scene, Strucker tells one of his scientists not to worry about the dissolution of S.H.I.E.L.D. because Hydra has a lot of other irons in the fire and part of the plan includes pitting the jailed twins against the Avengers to throw the heroes off the trail of what Hydra is really up to.

In addition to the destruction Ultron has planned for the world, the Avengers are going to have to deal with the speed of Quicksilver and the mind control and telekinesis capabilities of Scarlet Witch. Elizabeth Olsen talked to E! News about just what Scarlet Witch brings to the Avengers table.

“[Scarlet Witch] can do mind control. She can see into someone’s deepest fears, and she can also manipulate energy. It’s almost like she can create some sort of energy and use it to blast.”

The addition of Scarlet Witch also means Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow will no longer be the sole superhero female badass in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Olsen was excited about the addition of another strong female character.

“I don’t really have any scenes with Black Widow, so it’s nice that there’s almost a consistent female presence throughout this film. We kind of split the screen time a bit. It’s nice to play a female badass!”

Doubling the kick-ass women to play off the growing number of male superheroes has to be a good thing for everyone.

In an interview with IGN, Aaron Taylor-Johnson talked about how he sees the twins differently from the way Quicksilver was portrayed in X-Men: Days Of Future Past which highlights just how important he feels Scarlet Witch is to his character.

“They never had Scarlet Witch and I think without Scarlet Witch you couldn’t really have Quicksilver, because they’re twins. And they’re very yin and yang and they really balance each other out. So, I need her kind of sensibility and her emotional attachment to him for me to be kind of boisterous and have that kind of rage and be impatient and him feel like vulnerable and need to have this kind of feeling like… he wants nurturing from her too.”
