Matt LauerMatt Lauer, cohost of NBC’s “Today” morning show, was hurt in a near-crash with a deer on his bicycle over the weekend. Lauer dislocated his shoulder and had to miss his “Today” hosting duties Monday as a result.

Matt Lauer: Deer Accident

Matt Lauer was apparently riding his bike on Long Island when the deer ran in front of him. He braked and ended up flying over the handlebars as a result.

Lauer’s cohost, Meredith Vierra, said he sent an e-mail explaining the incident and jokingly suggesting that maybe the deer was “hired by the competition.”

NBC’s Lester Holt substituted for Lauer on “Today” Monday morning.

  1. This is the first deer accident that I've ever heard of involving a bike. He bucked the trend.

  2. Matt Lauer is the host of the Today show not the co-host.
Maybe you should stay home for a day and learn the facts.

  3. Omg.. are you seriously that anal?

Uh, actually, he IS the co-host, Einstein. He hosts Today WITH Meredith Viera, not by himself, making him a CO-host.

    co-host
–verb (used with object), verb (used without object)
    1. to host (a program) jointly with another.
    –noun
    2. a person who co-hosts.

  6. Yep…. this can happen. I actually smacked into a deer with my bicycle a few years back in Illinois. Talk about a surprise. Matt might want to consider installing a “deer whistle” on his bike to avoid future strikes.
