Doc McDreamy Is Dead And ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Writer Rhimes Is Just Mean, According To Fans Of The Show

All Grey’s Anatomy fans are used to death. In fact, the entire show, which is set in a hospital, swings from one death to the next. However, fans are genuinely shocked that Shonda Rhimes has killed off Dr. McDreamy.

A gasp went up across entire continents as McDreamy — aka super brain Dr. Derek Shepherd (played by Patrick Dempsey) — was killed by a mediocre storyline involving a truck.

I know how the fans feel. Grey’s Anatomy is one of my guilty pleasures, so I was not only disappointment but appalled when the story broke.

Dr. McDreamy was the glue in the first season, with his romantic endeavors to pin down Dr. Meredith Grey, whose mother, Dr. Ellis Grey, is the show’s namesake.

There were rumors earlier in the year that Patrick Dempsey might be on his way to pastures new, and it is not the first time significant characters have been savagely killed off by Rhimes.

The fans could have at least been given the soap opera-style cliff-hanging departure the character deserved. Alas, McDreamy was killed off in a record 15 minutes flat, after 11 years on Grey’s Anatomy.

The official statement from ABC regarding Patrick Dempsey’s departure said he was leaving the show because of other opportunities.

“After 11 seasons on Grey’s Anatomy, Patrick Dempsey is moving on to pursue other interests. Dr. Derek Shepherd is an iconic character and we’ve been proud to be the home of ‘McDreamy’ and the ‘Mer/Der’ love story. The devotion of Grey’s fans throughout the years has been a testament to the creative mind of Shonda Rhimes and Dempsey’s talent. ‘McDreamy’ will be greatly missed and we wish Patrick the very best in his future endeavors.”

The show’s creator Shonda Rhimes also released a statement.

“Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character — for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘McDreamy.’ Patrick Dempsey’s performance shaped Derek in a way that I know we both hope became a meaningful example — happy, sad, romantic, painful and always true — of what young women should demand from modern love. His loss will be felt by all. Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomyfamily are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say: the carousel never stops turning.”

Fans were not happy to say the least, and many went on a post-episode social media frenzy. The story continues to trend as fans who missed the episode catch up on the news.

Greys’ Anatomy may well be entering its sunshine years as most of the original characters have either left or died. A new flock of interns have arrived, but the main storyline has always hung around Meridith and Derek’s stormy love affair and marriage.
