Mitt Romney Misleading Conservatives on Romneycare, Santorum Whines

Mitt Romney seems, for all intents and purposes, to be edging ahead of Rick Santorum in the latest polls, but Santorum is not about to go down without a fight- and on Sunday, he lashed out at his opponent on one of the GOP’s sacred cow issues, health care reform.

Romney- affectionately nicknamed “flip-flopney” by his detractors due to his slippery ability to about face on core issues- has been excoriated time and again by both conservatives and liberals due to his previous, embarrassing gaffe of providing nearly universal health coverage to the citizens of Massachusetts when he was governor there, before he decided he didn’t like poor people having health insurance.

Yes, the specter of the money poor residents of Massachusetts could be paying right now to big corporations or collections agencies is one poor Mittens has had to live with since he left his post in 2006, but Rick Santorum isn’t about to let him off the hook for his transgressions in regards to health care reform.

Yesterday, Santorum huffed on Meet the Press:

“Governor Romney actually advocated for the Massachusetts model that President Obama adopted with mandates, and then went out on the campaign trail and repeatedly didn’t tell the truth. He went out and misled the voters that somehow or other he was not for mandates on a federal level, when in fact he was.”

Santorum then added that while he wasn’t going so far as to say Romney is a liar, per se:

“I’m saying in this case he didn’t say what was the truth.”

Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman for Mitt Romney, commented on Santorum’s comments, saying in part:

“Governor Romney has never advocated for a federal individual mandate. He believes in the 10th Amendment and, as a result, has always said that states should be free to come up with their own health care reforms.”

Do you think Mitt Romney tries to hide his Massachusetts accomplishments, and if so, to what end?
