Kristin Chenoweth Defends GCB Plotline: “We’re Having, Not Making, Fun”

Posted: March 12, 2012

kristin-chenoweth-newt-gingrich-good-christian-bitchesKristin Chenoweth stars in ABC’s controversial new series “GCB” — based on a book by Kim Gaitlin called “Good Christian Bitches” — and says she’s a Christian, but doesn’t find the show’s plotline offensive.

“There’s a difference between making fun of something and having fun with something,” she told NPR’s Jackie Lyden. “And we do the latter.”

Chenoweth calls herself “a God person” and speaks often about her faith, but she insists she’s not judgmental.

“It’s not my job to decide whether someone is ‘a sinner’ for doing something or being something or saying something. My grandma said, ‘Oh, Kris, I read the Bible like I eat fish. I eat the meat that serves me well, but I don’t choke on a bone.’ I loved that, and I’ve never forgotten it.”

Chenoweth’s remarks about the show come as multiple conservatives have slammed GCB, calling it a mockery of the Christian faith.

Last week GOP candidate Newt Gingrich addressed a crowd in Gulfport, Mississippi talking about how out of line the new ABC series is.

Gingrich said:

“To show you the biases of the elite media, look at the new show that’s on that has the word ‘Christian’ in it and I want you to take the exact name, drop out Christian and put in Muslim.

“And ask yourself, is there any network that would have dared to run a show like that? And you know the answer is not a one, because anti-Christian bigotry is just fine in the entertainment industry, but they have to be very protective of Islam.”

New York City councilman Peter Vallone also recently called for a boycott of the show’s alleged “attack on the Christian faith.”

Have you had a chance to watch GCB yet? If so, would you say the show is a complete mockery of Christians or just a non-hostile attempt at humor?

  1. I love the show, especially Kristin Chenoweth! She is amazing in this role. I've been a Christian all my life, the daughter of a evangelist and a minister for 6 years and I don't find it offensive. I find it to be funny. I even find some of it to be true. There are people who act just like the show portrays; problem is all those "good Christians" don't want to admit it. No one is perfect, no one is expected to be perfect. The One who was perfect is on the Throne in Heaven. These conservatives need to lighten up, grow up and give it up-they are making it impossible for people to even like Christians because of their attitudes.BTW-the "word" Christian is not even in the name of the show.

  2. Here's the issue here, in my opinion. Those that protest, and thust so too much in my opinion, are those who see a little of themselves in this show. There are hypocrites in all walks of life, and it so happens so most love to where there religion on their sleeves, this is the perfect venue. However, if you can't laugh at yourself, then whom do we laugh at.

Actually the C in GCB stands for Christian. I can't say what the B stands for without washing my mind out with soap.

  4. mephyve I know what the C stands for, but for those who have never heard of the book, they don't know what it stands for. The politician stated that the title said "Christian", and it doesn't.

  5. Well said…..

  6. Do we need this show? Is it positive? Newt's right, let's call it GMB, the M being for Muslim.

While I like the show, Gingrich does have a point that it would never be permitted if it was Good Muslim B******. Imagine if it was Good Jewish B******. I think this is more of an argument about why some terms are off limits in terms of being offensive while others are not.

  9. I read Kristen Chenoweth's article about this new series in Guidepost, a Christian publication. Needless to say this is not the show I was expecting and I don't think has the same title because I don't believe Guidepost would have published it. That is an opinion, not a fact.
I also make my best efforts not be be judgmental – I feel like we're all on this earth together and we will all be judged when our day comes. God will do the judging that needs to be done.

the show is a mockery of American Civil Religion, which puts a "christian" face on good ole fashioned paganism. I say hooray for it. Christians, were fighting the wrong war. Our job is to love God and love people… period.

The show sucks big-time and regardless of the name, it won't last long.

  12. My wife and I live in Dallas and she likes the show. I told her to enjoy it while she can…it won't be on long.

  13. I think the show is funny. And it's not about the Christian Faith, it's about the people. And there are, in fact, people just like the ones on the show. Conservatives have no sense of humor.

The previews for the show look like poo so I have NO desire to invest an hour of my time watching. After reading some of the comments and plot and other crap my 1st impression was correct. Can't wait till its cancelled.

For all you idiots out there that just want to jump on a stupid band wagon can shut up. Gingrich is an idiot and is just trying to start controversy. IT says Christian because that is what the author wrote it about. I don't see any one yelling at the author asking her why she didn't but Muslim in the title oh that is right it is not about Muslims. Must we constantly use the Muslim religion as a bad example of things. It's about Christians (NOT ALL) but you have to admit some are about throwing their faith down peoples throat and hiding behind the bible when they do bad things themselves. Like Kristen grandmother said just take in what you need and leave the rest alone. I find this show refreshing and the only people in my life that don't like are the people who act just like the one's in the show and I find that funny.

Raised Catholic, consider myself very spiritual (if not textbook Catholic any longer) and find the show very funny! In my experience, it doesn't matter what the person's faith technically is, the more "outwardly religous" someone is… the more judgemental they are… exactly like those on the show. Quote the Bible to serve ones own purpose? Done by every religion out there. Whenever someone in the show quotes it and then does something underhanded, sneaky or meanspirited… I can think of someone I have met in my life who does EXACTLY the same thing. Newt Gingrich is an amusing person to be trying to bash ABC on this topic.

Steen your correct… the title of the show is "GCB" not a single word in it, "Christian" or otherwise.

  18. the show stinks….Kristin is excellent on broadway, but is not good on film….she swallows her words and indicates quite a abit, plus she starting to show her age at rapid rate….her store bought boobs are another mattere…and donating so much money to Nobama is also a no no…we won't be watching the show..and the Bibb girl is even worse…what is wrong with those ABC execs….are they blind….Bibb is never good…at least Kristin has broadway.

  19. So, you have no desire to 'invest' an hour of your time watching GCB! But, you took some of your 'valuable' time to post about it! LOL! Think about that! And the show is a RIOT! Anyone who doesn't get a kick out of it is just LOOKING for trouble! Kristin has a GREAT voice and that's the highlight, but more than the Christian part, I'm cracking up at the 'girls' stabbing each other in the back! HILARIOUS!

  22. GCB is a rip-off of Edith Wharton's "Age of Innocence." I realized it last night when nobody would go to Gigi's luncheon for Amanda. (The same thing happened to Mrs Manson Mingott when she tried to throw a dinner party for the Countess Ellen Olenska. ) Gigi is Mrs MM, Sharon is May Welland, and Amanda is Ellen. It's not a new story line, it's a classic. Wharton was ridiculing (New York's) high society, and so does GCB.

Does this show represent Christ? It sure doesn't. Those of you who support and enjoy this show are completely IGNORANT to the world around you. Why would you want people who don't know Christ to see this embarrassing behavior? If this is a true representation of YOU or YOUR CHURCH, you should question whether you are just a "God Person" or committed to leading a holy life.

I can't believe how ignorant people are by using the term "judgmental" for EVERYTHING. If you are a Christian and buying into this stuff, you need to reconsider what you REALLY believe. If you think I'm being judgmental, than you should read the Bible and probably call Paul (the Apostle) judgmental as well.

What a disgrace and mockery! Very disappointing… As Paul says in 1 Cor. 5:2, "You are so proud of yourselves, but you should be mourning in sorrow and shame!"

I looked up the name of the show a few weeks ago, cuz I wanted to know what it stood for and I was appalled!!! Supposedly it was changed to Belles, but in my eyes the damage was done. I have no desire to watch or even know what the show is about. I won't say I always watch "wholesome" tv, but this show crosses the line for me, title alone.

  25. I consider myself to be a very strong Christian and very conservative to boot. BUT, I will not deny the honesty in this show! It is absolutely HILARIOUS to me! There are people like this in every church, temple, synagogue, whatever in America. It's about the people that use their religion to justify their actions. It's not bad…just truthful. The people taking offense probably just see the hypocrisy in their actions reflected through the show and take offense, because really…who likes to be called out in such a fashion? I love this show and I hope it continues on, because I believe it has a great message!

I am not even necessarily bothered by the title to be honest, but the content of the show and how it's entire purpose is to shame the church. I wonder how long a show would last if it made fun of homosexuals or of another worldview. We need to openly complain about this show to ABC. In my opinion, the real issue isn't about it "making fun of the church," it's completely denouncing the work of Christ in making us righteous, pure, and holy.

It's not about being conservative or liberal. It's not about denying the honesty of the show. How would you like it if someone took a close-up picture of a nasty zit you had and posted it all over Facebook? This is what GCB does to the body of Christ–it emphasizes and issue without showing the true beauty of the church. What "great message" are you talking about? Christians are hypocrites? Yeah, great message. There's a word for great message (GOSPEL) and this show has nothing to do with it.

  29. Ron Sieber The message isn't about being a hypocrite. It's about being yourself and trying to become a better person, whether Christian or not. Leslie Bibb's character is trying to be a better person, and she's trying to be honest with herself about who she was previously and how it's affected the people she touched. This show exhibits the contrast in all types of people…the people who talk the talk and the ones who walk it, and the people stuck somewhere in-between trying to make choices. If someome took a picture of a zit I had and posted on Facebook, I would simply say that I shouldn't have let that picture be taken in the first place, not place blame on the other person. If I don't take care of myself, it's not appropriate to blame others for my faults. The church has faults. All things have faults. Only God is perfect, and we simply strive to be like Him in our daily lives. That's all we can do, and if people can't see the beauty in that (and in the core story of this show) it simply means they either aren't looking, or they aren't ready to see it.

They don't mean anything by this! Comedy is comedy and that's that. GCB stands for Good Christian Belles and the book was Good Christin Bitches but Kristin has been using the book title but the name is interchangeable. As Kristin herself said, it's just humor! I've seen plenty of people like it, Christian or otherwise! (as in I am an atheist) but it's still just all in good fun and laughs.
