‘Avengers’ Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner Apologize For Slut Shaming Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow [Video]

Avenger’s stars Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner apologized today for slut shaming Scarlett Johansson’s character Black Widow during a promotional interview.

During an interview with Digital Spy, Evans and Renner were asked about their character’s possible romantic relationships with Black Widow, and they responded by calling Johansson’s character a slut and a “whore.”

When the interview hit the internet, Marvel fans went wild with displeasure

The Twittersphere blew up with angry comments from Marvel fans criticizing Evans and Renner for insulting Black Widow and saying the two should apologize.

The hashtag #uglywords grew in popularity as Avenger fans pummeled the star’s with their displeasure.

Fans of the two Avengers stars were worried about the impression their slut shaming would have and what it would mean to young girls.

The comments were obviously an off the cuff remark, and some Marvel fans defended Evans and Renner saying the two were just joking about a fictional character.

In an effort to tame the backlash from their comments, representatives from both Evans and Renner contacted USA Today by email and apologized for their remarks.

“Yesterday we were asked about the rumors that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologize.”

Johansson’s Black Widow had been romantically linked to both Renner’s Hawkeye and Evan’s Captain America, but in Avengers: Age of Ultron, she has a romantic liaison with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.

The movie Avengers: Age of Ultron has been receiving some questionable press lately.

The remarks from Captain America and Hawkeye come after cut scenes from Avengers: Age of Ultron were released showing a rape joke about prima nocta during the hammer lift competition, according to Metro.

Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. jokes that he will be the new ruler of Asgard after he lifts Thor’s hammer and will reinstitute prima nocta, the mid-evil custom that said a lord could rape any man’s wife on their wedding day.

This is the second time in two days the stars of Avengers: Age of Ultron have made the news.

Yesterday, Robert Downey Jr. walked out of an interview with British TV’s Channel 4 News when the reporter started asking personal questions about the star’s past.

Krishnan Guru-Murthy asked the 50-year old star about the dark periods of his life when he turned to alcohol and drugs, and Downey stood up and walked out.
