Bruno Mars Record-Breaking ‘Uptown Funk’ Attracts Parody Promoting Pet Adoption

Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” is having a pretty amazing year so far.

Back in February, Bruno brought down the house at this year’s Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey. As Live Design Online reported, Bruno Mars’ stellar performance had all the feel of an intimate live rock show, despite the fact that it was anything but intimate. According to TV By The Numbers, the halftime show reached up to 115.3 million viewers, making it the most-watched television show in U.S. history.

But that was just the beginning for Bruno Mars and “Uptown Funk.”

Last week, it was reported by Newsday that “Uptown Funk” is three weeks away from becoming the longest-running No. 1 hit of all time. Having spent 14 weeks at the top of the charts, “Uptown Funk” is already the longest-running No. 1 of the decade, and if it can hold its position for another three weeks, it will steal the crown from Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s hit “One Sweet Day,” which held the top spot for 16 weeks in 1995-96.

But that’s still not all.

When something is as popular and well-known as this Bruno Mars song, it’s bound to draw attention and parodies. Examples abound, but one that’s drawn significant attention is a parody created by the East Bay SPCA out of Oakland, California. Designed to promote animals adoption from shelters over purchasing a puppy or kitten from a puppy mill or an unregulated pet store, this video is all at once fun, clever, entertaining, and educational.

Featuring a cameo from Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, the video, named “Oaktown Pup,” features the staff and animals coolly strolling around the Oakland pet adoption facility. Regular and differently-abled dogs and cats are featured, proving the point that not only healthy, fully-abled pets are suitable for adoption. Check out the 2-legged, 2-wheeled dachshund at the 57-second mark, as well as the less-than-beautiful dogs looking snappy in bow-ties.

The chorus lyrics include:

“I’m too cute, hot dog! / Call the mayor and your girlfriend. / I’m too cute, hot dog! / Take a selfie for Instagram. / I’m too cute, hot dog! /Read my tag, you know who I am. / Too cute, hot dog! / And I’m ready to go home, break it down! / I’m adopted, hallelujah! / Cause uptown pup gonna give it to ya! / Cause time is right for you to adopt. / And spay or neuter your pup!”

With an additional reminder to spay or neuter your pets, the Bruno Mars parody video is good, harmless fun with plenty of aww-power and a poignant reminder.
