Deaf Baby Hears His Mom For The First Time [Video]

A deaf baby was fitted for hearing aids, and video of him hearing his mom for the first time since his birth has surfaced online. According to AOL News, Elijah was born completely deaf in his left ear and could only hear 75 decibels out of his right. At 9 weeks old, Elijah was able to hear the sound of his parents’ voices, something that was unbelievably special.

“We had no idea what to expect when we put in his hearing aids. I really didn’t think we would get a big reaction from him. Once I realized that he was blinking from my voice, I was excited that he could finally hear my voice. I could barely keep it together when I saw his first smile. I didn’t want his first hearing experience of me crying. Once I got to the parking lot and into my car I bawled my eye out. For the first couple days, I’d watch the video and get all misty eyed. It was just awesome to be able to share a small part of our world with him,” explained Elijah’s mother, Ahavah Cook.

The video of the deaf baby has gone viral. According to MTV, baby Elijah just stares at his mom as she talks to him. He then starts getting more animated, winking a lot, and smiling at her, clearly hearing her voice.

“The first time I saw him blink, I had a lot of emotions. I was trying really hard not to cry. I didn’t want him to see my cry. I was trying hard to keep it together and just talk to him,” Ahavah wrote in a blog.

“For the first baby that I get to actually look at being my own is very overwhelming. Even to look at my husband looking at him was such a good feeling. I got to fall in love with him,” said Beitz.

Kathy’s older sister is trying to raise money so that her sister can own a pair of these glasses, and so that she may be able to enjoy her baby in a different way — a way that most mothers take for granted.
