Westboro Baptist Church: If You Make Cakes For Divorced Couples, You Can Make Cakes For Gay Couples

The Westboro Baptist Church’s recent statement on the line between making cakes for same-sex couples and making cakes for other groups that some religious denominations condemn as sinners isn’t a surprising statement in itself. The source, though, is a bit shocking, until you realize that the statement isn’t intended to be supportive of LGBTQ rights, but condemning of… well, most of America.

The Westboro Baptist Church shared a Vine video on its Twitter feed Sunday (for a church, is posting to official social media accounts considered work?), condemning same-sex marriage (which the church calls by a different, extremely offensive name) with an image it has used before — a bloody cake with two stick figures on top appearing to mimic a sexual act.

With quotation marks to indicate how the Westboro group feels about the faith of those who accept remarriage, the caption read.

” ‘Christians’ baked/ate cake for divorce/remarriage, so now they can bake/eat [redacted anti-gay slur] cake?”

The image scrolls in the video, with a voice-over saying “Let them eat [anti-gay slur redacted] cake” and making references to the comparison between divorce and same-sex marriage. (Some Christian denominations, apparently including the Westboro Baptists, consider divorce and remarriage an act of adultery.)

An edited version of the image is shown below. If you’re curious to see the full form and hear the bizarre chant attached to it, you can click here — but be aware that it’s an offensive image that may make some viewers uncomfortable and is not appropriate for young audiences or the workplace.

The Westboro Baptist Church says same-sex marriage and remarriage after divorce are about the same.

Of course, while the Westboro Baptists are echoing a progressive talking point, they’re coming at it from an opposite angle. LGBTQ rights supporters have said that anyone denying cakes to same-sex couples but providing them for a second marriage is clearly acting not in response to a perception of sin, but from hate. The Westboro group, however, seems to suggest not that same-sex couples shouldn’t face discrimination, but that those entering into a second marriage should face it, as well.

Of course, the Westboro Baptist Church doesn’t only condemn LBGTQ individuals and people who remarry, but U.S. soldiers, politicians, and masses of others. They’ve picketed at a wide range of events, and clearly think that most of America is doomed. With, presumably, themselves as the only or almost-only exception.

Despite all of this, for the Westboro Baptist Church to echo an argument that is used to support non-discrimination laws and oppose religious freedom laws is more than a little bizarre, especially when they fought for the opportunity to intervene in a related legal battle.
