Laptop-Shooting Dad, Tommy Jordan, Talks About Internet Fame on ‘Today’

Tommy Jordan simultaneously became a hero and a villain when he posted a video of himself firing bullets into his daughter’s laptop on Youtube. The laptop-shooting dad appeared on “Today” with his teenage daughter Hannah to talk about the incident.

The video, which has been viewed more than 30 million times, shows Tommy Jordan sitting out in a field with his daughter’s laptop. He reads a letter that his daughter wrote about how unfair her parents are, then stands up and shoots the laptop.

Jordan said that he stands by what he did although he admits that he may have overreacted a little bit. But what really bothers him is the millions of people who immediately judged him and his daughter from a short video. Jordan said:

“A lot of people took eight minutes and 23 seconds of my life to judge me, and they took about 30 seconds of those where I read Hannah’s note to judge her. I have a great daughter. She made a mistake that day. I made a mistake that day. I stand behind what I did, but the consequences were a lot larger than what hers were.”

Jordan’s wife, Dr. Amy Jordan, said:

“People may look at that video that don’t know him or us and think we’re just completely uneducated country people, and that’s not the case. He’s very intelligent. He’s very thoughtful. He rarely does anything without thinking it through or even consulting me on a lot of occasions, and this wasn’t any different.’’

Jordan also said that he only destroyed the shell of the laptop. Jordan removed the hard drive of his daughter’s laptop to protect her personal data. Jordan said:

“Everybody assumed that this was a hot-headed rage when I did this, but just for proof, here’s Hannah’s hard drive. There was a little bit of thought in it.’’

Jordan may still have the hard drive, but he hasn’t put it in a new computer for his daughter. Jordan says that the family has made amends and that his daughter has apologized, but she is still grounded and can only use the family computer.
