Sandra Fluke Made Me Think Of Sasha And Malia, Says Obama

President Obama said that incident involving Rush Limbaugh and Sandra Fluke made him think of his own daughters, Sasha and Malia. The president decided to call Ms. Fluke after Limbaugh called her a “slut” on his radio show because he wanted to encourage her to keep speaking her mind.

Obama said:

“The reason I called Ms. Fluke is because I thought about Malia and Sasha and one of the things that I want them to do as they get older is to engage in issues they care about, even ones that I may not agree with the on. And I don’t want them attacked or called horrible names because they’re being good citizens… I wanted Sandra to know that I thought her parents should be proud of her, and that we want to send a message to all our young people that being part of a democracy involves argument and disagreements and debate. And we want you to be engaged, and there’s a way to do it in a way that doesn’t involve you being demeaned and insulted.”

Fluke testified before congress last week to advocate insurance coverage of contraceptives for women. After Fluke’s testimony, Limbaugh called her a “slut” and a “prostitute” for wanting free birth control. Obama said that that type of language has no place in “public discourse,” especially when it’s aimed at a private citizen.

Limbaugh has apologized for his comments but the radio host has still lost several sponsors.
