‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Spoilers: Cobie Smulders Returning As Maria Hill, Coulson’s Secret and Skye’s Family

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 2 is nearing its end, and with everything going on right now – especially considering there are essentially two S.H.I.E.L.D.s in opposition – it only seems to make sense that familiar faces could appear. Well, in the case of at least one person, that will happen. But how will she be involved?

While Maria Hill’s name was on top of a memo in this week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode, Cobie Smulders didn’t appear as her character in “Melinda.” (She was last on screen on the show in last season’s “Nothing Personal.”) However, she will be back in an upcoming episode, as she told Jimmy Kimmel.

“There is one coming up. I pop in every now and again to link the two worlds – the two worlds being the movies and the TV show – together.”

When she does return, however, it’s a question of which side Maria Hill is going to be on – Gonzales’ “real S.H.I.E.L.D.” or Coulson’s group, on the run. Coulson has been keeping quite the secret, as May and Simmons learned, and executive producer Jeffrey Bell spoke to Entertainment Weekly about what that means for everyone involved.

“This is the biggest secret that Coulson has carried in the series and the reveal will greatly affect how he’s viewed not only by Gonzales’ S.H.I.E.L.D., but also by Coulson’s team. One of the big stories this season has been the shift in Coulson’s attitude, from the season premiere where he’s running secret missions within secret missions to the revelation that he’s kept Deathlok’s covert ops hidden from his team. As the stakes have changed, Coulson’s methods have changed and not everyone will be accepting, even if he’s doing it for the right reasons.”

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Episode 17 saw Skye training with Jiaying. That Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode also saw Jiaying confirm what Skye had suspected: she’s her mother. However, she also revealed that she can’t tell anyone because of the rules they have there. Jiaying also set up a family dinner with Cal, one that Skye only agreed to under the condition that after, her mother would send her father away. But will she? Bell said that just because Skye has found her family doesn’t mean that things are going to be any easier for her.

“Now she’s going to learn how hard it can be to have family, especially when they have super powers and one of them has, to say the least, anger management issues. So if Jiaying commits to sending Cal away, you can imagine he’s not going to take that revelation well – and Skye will need to decide how much she truly wants this relationship with her father.”

With Skye now one of the Inhumans, does that mean she could possibly pop up in the Marvel movie in 2019? Chloe Bennet spoke to MTV News about just that, and for now, no one has talked to her, but she would love if it someone did.

Elsewhere, Coulson and Hunter are on the run, and once Fitz can shake his tail, he’s ready to join them. In order to get S.H.I.E.L.D. back, they need help from one other person: Ward. Bell told EW this is not a situation any of them want to be in – including Ward, considering he’s at the top or near the top of probably everyone’s hit list.

“We’re sticking him in a Quinjet with the leader he betrayed, Coulson, the ally he turned over to Hydra for experimentation, Mike, and the friend who he left to die in the ocean, Fitz. Even though Hunter is new to the team, he’s aware of Ward’s betrayal and knows that he can’t be trusted and there’ll be tension in that relationship as well.”

In other words, get ready for some awkward silences, death glares (and probably threats) and more fun.
