Dax Shepard, Kristen Bell In Couples Therapy, Find Out Why

Dax Shepard and his wife Kristen Bell are in couples therapy. But why?

The happy couple, who married in 2013, credit their loving relationship to bringing in a professional. They believe that participating in couples therapy is a way of preventing marital problems before they ever happen.

“I noticed an actor and her husband on [a recent tabloid cover] that said In Couples’ Therapy! The clear message is, ‘Oh, their marriage is ending.’ There’s such a negative connotation,” Shepard told Good Housekeeping during a recent interview. “In my previous relationship, we went to couples’ therapy at the end, and that’s often too late. You can’t go after nine years and start figuring out what patterns you’re in.”

The couple first met at a Detroit Red Wings hockey game back in 2007. While they have been inseparable ever since, Dax admits that he was skeptical of Bell’s “unbridled happiness,” and it took a while for them to be able to trust each other.

“I thought to myself, ‘Who is this sparkly creature?'” Shepard recalled to US Weekly. “We have such different backgrounds, it’s comical. Until I was 32, I thought the world was just wolves, that there was no way anyone was acting with any kind of benevolence. When I met her and her friends, I was suspicious of their unbridled happiness. I thought, ‘Something stinks here; they’re in a cult.'”

“Slowly I began to see her positive way of looking at the world,” he continued. “She gives people the benefit of the doubt. There were hurdles, things she didn’t trust about me, things I didn’t trust about her. I just kept going back to ‘This person has the thing I want, and I have to figure out how we can exist peacefully.’ So we started [seeing a therapist together] right away.”

Bell felt the same way, and said they just want to work on their marriage like everyone else.

“You do better in the gym with a trainer; you don’t figure out how to cook without reading a recipe. Therapy is not something to be embarrassed about.”

“I don’t mind advertising a healthy marriage. I’m trying, just like everyone else.”

The couple are proud parents to two children, Lincoln and Delta. Bell explained that their lives have definitely changed since they became parents, but she wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Our life has taken a turn, but not in a bad way,” Bell said. “I yearn for more one-on-one time and romantic outings with my husband, but the kids have added a lot more excitement and a different kind of fun.”
