‘Avengers 2’ Sneak Peek

Fans of Marvel Studios’ The Avengers will have some surprises coming their way when the second movie (subtitled Age of Ultron) hits theaters this May. Christian Today’s entertainment section reported that Captain Marvel would not be appearing in the second Avengers movie, but did receive hints from Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige about a secret female character who would be appearing in the movie.

While Feige did not mention which character fans would see in the new movie, Christian Today speculated that the mystery woman could be Pepper Pots from Iron Man and the original Avengers movie (portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow), or possibly Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) from Thor. It’s possible Marvel could introduce a new character from its comics as well, but right now we have only fan’s guesses to go with.

Christian Today seemed to think the female character who appears in Avengers 2 would not have a prominent role based on Mr. Fiege’s interview with Entertainment Weekly. However, Avengers 2 director Joss Whedon dispelled that myth, as Screenrant.com noted.

“There are four prominent female roles in the center of the movie, and a more balanced role throughout the movie,” Screenrant quoted Whedon as saying at the Guardians of The Galaxy premiere in London.

Screenrant added that Whedon (Firefly) has a history of casting female characters as either main characters or other roles central to the production, as evidenced in Buffy The Vampire Slayer(which Whedon created). Screenrant went on to say that Whedon has “expressed frustration” at movie studios’ hesitance to laying out big money on action flicks starring female leads, adding that he hopes this phobia will change due to the success of movies like The Hunger Games.

With many fans of Marvel’s movies and comics lamenting over superheroines who are essentially carbon copies of their male counterparts (Spider-Man and Spider-Girl being one example) or just there to play a love interest, casting a totally new character who is the exception rather than the rule could help Marvel should they choose to do so.

Fan-generated rumors surrounding the Avengers movies keep Joss Whedon’s prophecy that there will be plenty of death in Avengers 2 close to heart. As Inquisitr mentioned in September of last year, there have been rumors going around that suggest one of the Avengers (possibly Iron Man) will die during the events of Avengers 2. Thus far, Marvel Studios has kept a pretty tight lip, so Whedon’s teaser will have to suffice for the time being. In the meantime, fans dying to get more Marvel can check out the spin-off TV series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, which airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. Eastern on ABC.
