Gregg Williams Admits To Paid Bounty Program. Injure An NFL Opponent And Earn Some Cash

NFL coach Gregg Williams has run some of the toughest defenses in the NFL and it turns out his players have been motivated by injury, specifically their ability to injure their fellow opposing players.

According to a recent report Williams was paying his players a bounty for every star player they hurt on opposing teams, a bounty that nearly 25 members of the New Orleans Saints took part in over the last three seasons.

Williams on Saturday admitted that he was responsible for the bounty program and released the following statement:

“I am truly sorry” and the program was a “terrible mistake and we knew it was wrong while we were doing it.”

In a statement from the NFL league commissioner Roger Goodell said:

“The payments here are particularly troubling because they involved not just payments for ‘performance,’ but also for injuring opposing players. The bounty rule promotes two key elements of NFL football: player safety and competitive integrity.

“It is our responsibility to protect player safety and the integrity of our game, and this type of conduct will not be tolerated. We have made significant progress in changing the culture with respect to player safety and we are not going to relent. We have more work to do and we will do it.”

It was also revealed this week that Williams offered the same type of bounty program to players on the Washington Redskins roster during his time with that organization.

Williams now serves as the defensive coordinator with the St. Louis Rams.

At least one player for Williams in the meantime points to the paid injury program as a means to promote “good, hard football” and not as a means to purposefully injure players from opposing organizations.

Do you think Gregg Williams should be punished by the NFL’s front office for his implementation and promotion of the bounty program?
