63% Of Americans Back Birth Control Coverage

In a recent vote the US Senate blocked the Blunt contraception amendment 51-48, while that margin was rather low a recent study shows that the American people would have blocked the amendment with a vote of closer to 63-37.

While that number may be more representative throughout America as a whole, it turns out that it’s a largely partisan issue with eight in 10 democrats backing the requirement, six in 10 independents on-board and just four in 10 Republicans agreeing to the original bill.

While not all American’s back the requirement that health insurers be required to cover birth control costs most do approve of the use of birth control. According to one pollster:

“The answers say more about people’s views on the role of government than on the issue of contraception.”

Nearly 43% of Republican women see the matter as an issue of religious freedom, that compared to just 10% of Democratic women. Interestingly both men and women didn’t differ much on the issue.

While the birth control issue has come to the forefront of the political debate since the Obama Administration made birth control coverage a requirement for all agency’s including religious organizations many experts have publicly stated that the issue is differing from bigger issues such as the economy and a failing education system.
