Scott Brown Replaces Controversial Kennedy Radio Ad, Refused to Honor Kennedy Request to Pull It

Republican ballsiness would dictate that even in the presence of a request from a dead man’s son that you quit invoking his father in a series of misleading political ads you don’t sway to courtesy, and in the Massachusetts election, incumbent Scott Brown did not disappoint his party fellows by caving in- particularly to a Kennedy, no less. Barf.

Sen. Ted Kennedy was as beloved by lefties as he was maligned by righties in his home state of Massachusetts, where Brown is currently duking it out with Democrat Elizabeth Warren. Warren, like Kennedy before her, is a bit of a champion of social justice and fortifying the middle class, and Brown is… well, a Republican.

Kennedy was a staunch supporter of women’s reproductive rights, and last week Brown hit the airwaves with a spot insinuating that Kennedy would have supported a religious exception to contraceptive coverage laws, which is laughably unlikely and probably entirely untrue. Kennedy’s son Patrick Kennedy emailed Brown, asking him to stop running ads lying about the dead senator:

“You are entitled to your own opinions, of course, but I ask that, moving forward, you do not confuse my father’s positions with your own. I appreciate the past respect you have expressed for his legacy, but misstating his positions is no way to honor his life’s work.”

It is really galling, since among his positions, Kennedy was an early and vocal supporter of healthcare reform and advocated a single payer option- and although Kennedy was a Catholic, it is almost unthinkable he would have come down with Brown on this. Which is all speculation, because he’s dead. Anyway, Brown’s ad has now been replaced with one about women in combat, but his team is quick to confirm that that has nothing to do with the requests of the Kennedys, thank you very much. His spokesman confirmed that the Ted Kennedy spot “ran for a week, which is the usual cycle for the Scott Brown radio reports.”

Do you think given Kennedy’s political history, Scott Brown is disingenuous for running the ad?
