‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Season 2 Episode 17 Preview: How Melinda May Became ‘The Cavalry’ Will Be Revealed

Ready to finally find out why Agent Melinda May is known as “The Cavalry”? Well, that answer is coming in the next Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 episode, “Melinda.” But that’s not all you have to look forward to in episode 17.

In this next episode, May’s “The Cavalry” origins are revealed when she finds herself at a crossroads in the war between Coulson and Gonzales. Also, Skye learns more about her true heritage from Lincoln, and the truth about the Inhumans sends her in a new direction.

As you can see in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “Melinda” promo below, Jiaying is training Skye. The rest of it is all about May.

“There’s a reason why they call Agent May ‘The Cavalry,’ and it will finally be revealed,” the video teases while showing her in action.

At the end of the last episode, Gonzales offered May a seat on the board, trying to win her over with the suggestion that Coulson could use an advocate and the warning that S.H.I.E.L.D. could fall again if the two organizations remain at odds. So when better than now for how “The Cavalry” came to be to be revealed?

Entertainment Weekly spoke to executive producer Jeff Bell to find out what to expect from May, and he teased that “she’s a very different May.”

“This is the May before this incident happened. and so there are qualities that Ming[-Na Wen] brings to the role. Seeing her married back in the day… we’ve already met Andrew (Blair Underwood), but to sort of see what May was like back at that time is a different color, and I think Ming does that beautifully.”

The EP also revealed that episode 17 is going to be similar to 15 in the sense that while 15 saw what was happening with Bobbi back when S.H.I.E.L.D. fell and what was happening with her in the present, May’s backstory has to be “compelling enough so that you don’t mind it being a backstory, so that when you come back to the present story, you’re equally interested.”

Since fans have wanted to see just how May became “The Cavalry” for quite some time now, there probably isn’t any reason to even begin to wonder if they’ll want to see both past and present for May.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Luke Mitchell has come in as Lincoln, who is part of Skye’s storyline as she learns more about her powers. Skye’s mother, Jiaying, is taking over her training, and she’s also not letting Cal see their daughter. According to TVLine, “Melinda” will see Skye getting a better grasp on her powers.

In other Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. news, EW has also reported that Marvel is planning a spinoff, but if you want to know any details about it, you have to watch the rest of this season of the series.

“Story elements that are still to come on S.H.I.E.L.D. this year will be used to lay the groundwork for the potential new series,” EW explained.

Of course, this is only a possible spinoff for now, but even so, keep your eyes peeled throughout the rest of the season and head to the comments with your guesses about a potential plot.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 2 airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
