New Crowdfunded ‘Star Trek: Renegades’ TV Series Full Of Alumni Cast, Trailer Debuts
It has been 10 years since Star Trek fans last were graced with a TV series to satisfy their Trekkie needs, and next year marks the 50th anniversary of the original series’ airing. What better time than now to pitch a new Star Trek series to CBS in the hopes of getting picked up? Yes, it’s true, we were recently given two new big-screen adaptations from J.J. Abrams, but the popular series needs to return to its roots where it belongs, and that’s where Star Trek: Renegades comes in.
Renegades is a fan-made episodic series that was crowdfunded twice; once in 2012 on Kickstarter, where it raised $240,000, and again in 2013 on Indiegogo, which pulled in an additional $133,555. Directed by Tim Russ, who played the Vulcan Tuvok on Star Trek: Voyager, Renegades is set 10 years after Voyager returns from the Delta Quadrant and will take on darker quality than any previous Star Trek series, “delving into the dark side of the human psyche,” the official website states.
“It is ten years after Voyager’s return from the Delta Quadrant, and the Federation is in a crisis. The Federation’s main suppliers of dilithium crystals are disappearing. Space and time have folded around several planets, effectively isolating them from any contact with outside worlds. And this phenomenon is not natural – someone or something is causing this to happen. This necessitates drastic measures; some of which are outside the Federation’s normal jurisdiction. For this, Admiral Pavel Chekov, head of Starfleet Intelligence, turns to Commander Tuvok, Voyager’s former security officer and current head of the newly reorganized Section 31. Tuvok must put together a new covert, renegade crew – mostly outcasts and rogues – even criminals. This new crew is tasked with finding out what is causing the folding of time and space, and stopping it – at all costs.”
Alumni reprising their roles for Renegades include Tim Russ, Walter Koenig (Chekov in the original Star Trek series), Manu Intiraymi (Icheb, Star Trek: Voyager), Robert Picardo (The Holodoctor/Dr. Lewis Zimmerman, Voyager), and Richard Herd (Admiral Owen Paris, Voyager). Newcomers to the Star Trek universe will be Edward Furlong, Sean Young, Kevin Fry, Corin Nemec, Larissa Gomes, Bruce A. Young, and Adrienne Wilkinson, among many others.
