Bruno Mars’ And Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Funk’ Ties Mariah Carey’s ‘We Belong Together’

Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson’s hit, “Uptown Funk,” has given Mariah Carey some bad news today. Carey held the record for most weeks at No. 1 this century with her megahit “We Belong Together.” Now, she is tied with “Uptown Funk.” Billboard describes the victory.

“Mark Ronson’s ‘Uptown Funk,’ featuring Bruno Mars, ties for the second-longest-leading Billboard Hot 100 ever, ruling the chart for a 14th week. The smash also ties for the chart’s longest command this century…’Funk,’ released on RCA Records, ties six other singles for the second-best run at No. 1 dating to the Hot 100’s Aug. 4, 1958, launch, with only one song having led longer.”

Mariah Carey can still celebrate. After all, it’s her 1995 hit “One Sweet Day” that she sang with Boyz II Men that still holds the record for most weeks at No. 1 in music chart history, at 16 weeks. “Uptown Funk,” however, still has legs and could easily take the record for the most weeks at No. 1. Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson have a lot to celebrate.

Some have accused “Uptown Funk” of being a novelty song, but Mark Ronson tells Time it isn’t.

“But the song couldn’t come from a more genuine place. That song started as a jam with Bruno Mars on drums, [co-producer] Jeff Bhasker on synths and myself on bass playing the music that we love the most. That’s literally how the song started. I can’t obviously run around to every person and explain my process to them.”

Mark Ronson also laughs on how, despite producing many hits over the past two decades, people still think of him as a “new” artist after the success of “Uptown Funk.”

“Definitely 90 percent of the people who discover the song wouldn’t have had any idea who I was before. A photographer told me he was leaving the house and his wife was like, ‘Honey, who are you shooting today?’ He was like, ‘I’m going to photograph the white guy in the Bruno Mars video!’ I have no problem with that. As long as people are discovering the music, it’s cool.”

Before “Uptown Funk,” Mark Ronson produced Grammy-winning albums for artists like Adele and Amy Winehouse. According to a talk with Interview, Ronson will produce another pop diva’s album very soon.

“I’m going to do some recording with Lana Del Rey today and tomorrow. I found this cool old studio out here,” the “Uptown Funk” producer tells the magazine.

Ronson is in the process of creating demos for Del Rey. Let’s hope that he can come up with the same magic that he cooked up for “Uptown Funk.”
