Sharista Giles: Comatose Woman Wakes Up Three Months After She Gives Birth

Sharista Giles, a 20-year-old woman from Madisonville, Tennessee, met with an accident back in December, 2014, that left her in a coma since then. Giles, who was five months pregnant at the time of her accident, was in a car on the way home from a concert in Nashville when the driver of the car she was in fell asleep at the wheel. The car ended up crashing into a concrete barrier. According to 6ABC, Sharista was grievously injured in the accident and was in a comatose state ever since. Initially, Sharista’s prognosis was grim. The doctors treating her said that it is unlikely that she would ever wake up from the coma.

Even though the prognosis was grim, her family continued to treat her and she was recently transferred to a better facility at the Harriman Care and Rehabilitation Center. Meanwhile, Sharista’s baby was prematurely delivered by doctors in January to ensure that the health of the baby is not affected. He weighed less than two pounds at birth and now weighs 6 pounds and 4 ounces.

And earlier this week on Wednesday, defying the doctor’s prognosis, Sharista Giles opened her eyes — for the first time in nearly four months.

Beverly Giles, one of Sharista’s aunts, told ABC News the following.

“The doctors were telling us there was nothing else they could do. They already gave up hope. We never gave up. She’s fought this hard.”

Beverly also set up a Facebook page for Sharista, where regular updates on her condition were posted.

On Wednesday, Sharista’s family received a call from the Harriman Care and Rehabilitation Center, who told them that she had opened her eyes. Several family members rushed into see her and her room was with packed with family members a few hours later.

Upon seeing her family members, Sharista blinked and gave her family members a hand squeeze. She also looked at her father and followed him with her eyes as he moved across the room. A few minutes later, Sharista was shown a picture of her baby by her father.

“He showed her a picture of her baby, and she followed the picture. When he turned around to put it back on the bulletin board, she turned her neck, her whole head trying to follow and find the picture again,” said Beverly.

While it is not clear whether Sharista has regained consciousness, the fact that she has opened her eyes itself is being seen as major improvement. In the days to come, Sharista’s family members hopes to bring Sharista’s baby close to her. The baby, who has interestingly been not named by the family members, is currently at the University of Tennessee Medical Center’s neonatal intensive care unit. Sharista’s family members simply call him “Baby L.” Sharista’s family members are hopeful that her condition will improve once she is reunited with her baby.

The news about Sharista comes just a few days after the Inquisitr reported about the story of Matt and Danielle. Matt, who was also in a coma, was nursed back to health by Danielle, who refused to give up on her love even after doctors had gave her a grim prognosis.

We hope Sharista’s condition improves in the coming months and she makes a complete recovery.
