‘Five Nights At Freddy’s’ Heading To A Movie Theater Near You

The popular video game Five Nights at Freddy’s, created by Scott Cawthon, is reportedly heading to the big screen. According to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has acquired the rights to the survival horror game, and Entertainment Weekly also confirmed they have the rights. Without a writer or director at this time, it’ll be a while before the video game-turned-movie hits theaters.

If you haven’t heard of Five Nights at Freddy’s, imagine a place like the family-friendly pizza restaurant Chuck E. Cheese with its animatronic characters singing happy songs during the day. Now picture yourself as the security guard, and the restaurant is closed for the night. Those animatronic characters? They come to life only to go on murderous rampages. The setting of Five Nights at Freddy’s is a fictional pizza place called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, which some players have said reminds them of a demonic Chuck E. Cheese. As the nighttime security guard, the player must defend himself from the animatronic characters who come to life when the restaurant closes.

The adaptation of Five Nights at Freddy’s will be produced by Roy Lee of Vertigo Entertainment and Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg of KatzSmith Productions. Lee produced the Poltergeist remake, which is set to release on May 22. He’s also known for The Woman in Black, and the American adaptations of the horror films The Ring and The Grudge.

Bookworms may recognize Seth Grahame-Smith’s name as the New York Times bestselling author of the novels Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. Grahame-Smith wrote the script for the adaptation of his Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter novel and was also the scriptwriter for Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows.

Grahame-Smith said, “We’re looking forward to working with Scott [Cawthon] to make an insane, terrifying and weirdly adorable movie.”

The Hollywood Reporter quoted Cawthon as saying, “The story really lends itself to being a movie, and it taps into a largely unexplored niche of horror that a lot of people will be able to relate to.”

So where did the idea for Five Nights at Freddy’s come from? Cawthon had previously developed a kid friendly game called Chipper & Sons Lumber Co. which received a lot of negative feedback, especially concerning the main character, a young beaver. In an interview with Indie Game Magazine, Cawthon explained how that game inspired Five Nights at Freddy’s.

“I’d made a family friendly game about a beaver before this, but when I tried to put it online it got torn apart by a few prominent reviewers. People said that the main character looked like a scary animatronic animal. I was heartbroken and was ready to give up on game-making. Then one night something just snapped in me, and I thought to myself–I bet I can make something a lot scarier than that.”

The question now is, will the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie focus on one of the games or all three? As the Inquisitr previously reported, the third game that came out could be the last of the series. Will there be a trilogy of films or one? The answer lies in whether Five Nights at Freddy’s strikes enough fear into movie goers.
