Miley Cyrus Will Be Inducting Joan Jett Into The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame

In a move that has left Rock and Roll fans with their jaws on the floor, president and CEO of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Greg Harris nonchalantly announced at a press conference on Wednesday that Miley Cyrus will be inducting Joan Jett & The Black Hearts into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at their annual induction ceremony, scheduled for April 18.

Last month, when the initial roster of performers and inductors were announced last, the person who had been selected to induct Joan Jett had been conveniently left out of the list. Perhaps now we know why.

Though Harris assured the press gathered to hear the conference that Cyrus and Jett were “mutual admirers,” — citing the fact that the two had previously performed on the Oprah Winfrey Show together — the assurance has done nothing to calm Joan’s fans who took to Social Media to express their disappointment, and in some cases, outrage, at the choice.

While Joan Jett may be happy with Miley inducting her into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, for long time Jett admirers, it’s more like a kick in the teeth. With her first band, The Runaways, Jett was a member of one of the first all-girl Rock and Roll bands ever. In 1980, after being rejected by 23 record labels, she also became one of the first women in history to found her own record label, Blackheart Records, which is still producing records today. Jett paved the way for all the women of rock who came after her. Miley Cyrus, on the other hand, is famous for shaking her butt, sticking out her tongue, and riding giant, phallic hot dogs.

According to Cleveland.com, a source close to Joan Jett, who prefers not to be named, says the “Bad Reputation” singer is happy with the choice.

“She and Miley are close. They did Oprah together years ago. You can take a look at that footage, but there is a huge fondness there for each other. I know she’s very happy with the choice.”

Having Miley induct Joan Jett is probably one of the most shocking choices in Rock and Roll Hall of Fame history, but Rock and Roll has always been about shocking people, after all.

How do you feel about Miley inducting Joan Jett into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Who would you rather see induct one of the most influential female rockers of all time?
