Radio Shack, Best Buy drop iPad 2 prices ahead of iPad 3 announcement

Apple’s iPad 3 hasn’t even been officially announced yet, but that isn’t stopping some retailers from dropping iPad 2 prices in expectation of an impending iPad 3 reveal.

Engadget picked up an internal memo from Radio Shack that says, effective today, the retailer will be dropping the price on all iPad 2 models by between $20 and $50, suggesting that the retailer is looking to clear out stock–perhaps in anticipation of the iPad 3?

The Radio Shack website confirms the listing, with the 16GB Wi-FI iPad 2 seeing a modest price reduction of $20. All of the other iPad 2 models are getting a more significant price drop, with $50 being marked off across all other models.

Radio Shack isn’t the only retailer slashing iPad 2 prices. Best Buy also be dropping prices on the iPad 2 by $50, but Best Buy’s price drop is apparently a temporary deal–Radio Shack’s internal memo makes it seem as if their price drop is permanent.

Apple didn’t flat-out say that an iPad 3 reveal was coming, but the company did send out invites to press earlier today for an event to be held on March 7. In the invite, Apple teased: “We have something you really have to see. And touch.”

Will you be picking up a discounted iPad 2, or would you rather to wait and see what the iPad 3 is capable of?
