Avril Lavigne’s Husband Speaks Out About Her Battle With Lyme Disease

Avril Lavigne has found her way back into the spotlight and her husband, Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger, couldn’t be happier about it.

Back in December, Lavigne revealed on Twitter that she was dealing with a difficult health condition and on April 1, Lavigne revealed what that condition was: Lyme disease.

Since then, Lavigne has opened up about the time spent bedridden with the disease, and now her husband is having his turn. On Wednesday, Avril Lavigne’s husband talked to an Australian radio show about Lavigne’s illness, saying that he’s relieved and thankful that her condition is now known publicly.

“I’m like OK the wife has come out and said this and now I don’t have to keep hiding… with everyone going ‘What’s wrong with your wife, what’s wrong with your wife’ and me just going, ‘ah she’s gonna be fine.’

“I’m like ‘OK, I can talk about this now.'”

Kroeger said that Avril Lavigne is doing much better now, and in an interview with PEOPLE magazine, Lavigne said that she’s about “80 percent” improved. While she was sick, Lavigne said she went entire weeks without showering because she wasn’t able to stand. In total, Avril Lavigne was bedridden for five months, she said.

As part of her recovery, Lavigne changed her diet. She now eats a dairy-, sugar-, and gluten-free diet of only organic food, and drinks juice three times a day, she told PEOPLE magazine.

Lavigne believes she contracted the disease from a bug bite last spring. Humans can come down with Lyme disease after being bitten by ticks, fleas or mosquitoes, and though the incubation period is usually about two weeks, sometimes it’s much longer. As a result, it can be difficult to identify exactly when the disease was contracted.

Lavigne first noticed her symptoms in April of 2014 and initially thought she had the flu. After the illness failed to clear up, Lavigne recognized she might be sick with something more serious, and in October, the 30-year-old singer isolated herself in her home. Avril’s mother came to stay with her, and Kroeger took tour breaks to help out as often as possible.

While she was on the mend, Avril initially asked Kroeger not to talk about her condition during interviews and appearances, so to be able to be open about Lavigne’s Lyme disease has made things a bit easier, Kroeger said while talking to the radio station.

“Things are looking up and definitely getting better.”

Lavigne is relieved to share her experience too, she told PEOPLE magazine, and she’d like to use her struggle with the disease to help others.

“I’m a very private person, but I can’t just sit here and do nothing. I want to help people, and the first thing is bringing more awareness to Lyme disease … People don’t really talk about the disease, and help can be minuscule,” Avril Lavigne told the magazine.
