Nicole Kidman Doesn’t Stand For Women’s Rights? Flight Attendants Question Her Integrity

This is not Nicole Kidman’s lucky year. Recently, the actress was featured in several Etihad Airways advertisements and her involvement with the airline company is now being questioned by the Association of Professional Flight Attendants.

According to the union, Kidman’s collaboration with Etihad conflicts with her role as a U.N. Goodwill Ambassador promoting the protection of women’s rights. This is based on the allegations that the airline has been practicing maltreatment of their female employees. Aside from that, APFA also pointed out that Etihad is owned by the United Arab Emirates, a nation with laws that discriminate against women.

In an open letter dated April 2, APFA called out to the actress.

“We urge you, on behalf of the women and girls that you spoke of so eloquently, not to play a part in promoting Etihad Airways, a company that imposes abusive labor practices on its female employees and whose sole owner is a government that stands against the very world that you imagine.”

Additionally, the union asked Kidman to join their cause. On the letter posted on their website, they expressed, “The APFA – a union that represents 25,000 flight attendants, including nearly 19,000 female crewmembers – has long been a leading voice on the issue of discriminatory labor practices in our industry. We would gladly welcome your voice to our effort.”

The abusive labor practices that the union referred to include the firing of flight attendants who get pregnant. The airline company has also reportedly been keeping their female employees in isolation by requiring them to live in secured housing facilities prohibiting them from interacting with other people in the UAE.

In an official statement released last Friday, Etihad responded to this issue. While APFA is urging Kidman to back out from her deal with the airline company, Etihad encouraged the actress to continue her collaboration with them.

Etihad also denied the accusations regarding their unfair labor practices.

“When a cabin crew member informs Etihad of a pregnancy, she is provided with appropriate ground duties for the duration of her pregnancy. During this time, she remains fully compensated and fully engaged on the ground.”

Meanwhile, Kidman has remained quiet throughout this ruckus. Forbes thinks that this is because the actress has recognized how she foolishly placed herself in the middle of a conflict between Western and Islamic culture.
