Meryl Streep Wins Best Actress At 2012 Academy Awards [Video]

Posted: February 27, 2012

Meryl Streep

This was a tight one but in the end, at the 84th Academy Awards, Meryl Streep beat out Viola Davis to win her third Oscar.  Streep had been nominated for 17 Oscars and is considered the most celebrated actress in Hollywood.

Streep was not so graceful about accepting the award saying,

“When they called my name, I had this feeling I could hear half of America going, ‘Ohhh, no, not her again’”

She then went on to thank her husband for all his love and support.

Streep was nominated for the Oscar for her role in the hit movie “The Iron Lady”.  In “The Iron Lady” Streep played British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher as she finished up her career in politics and went back into private life.

The last time Streep took home a statue was in 1983 for her role in “Sophie’s Choice.”.  this one was as close as they come also.  It was down to Streep and Davis and it was as much of a surprise to Meryl Streep as it was the rest of the world.  The two, Streep and Davis, are close friends after appearing together in “Doubt”.

The two have been battling all year for awards.  Streep won the Golden Globe and BAFTA award, but Davis grabbed Best Actress at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.  A lot of commentators though that the SAG award would  give Davis the fast track to the Oscar.

In addition to Davis, the other actresses up for the Statue were Michelle Williams (“My Week With Marilyn”), Rooney Mara (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) and Glenn Close (“Albert Nobbs”).

Do you think Meryl Streep deserved to win Best Actress?

I loved her performance, and people just come to expect these great performances from her..but ny heart and head were with Olivia Davis…her performance was incredible…

  2. No I don't because I don't know of anyone who watched this compared to "The Help". I've never heard about how good this movie is.

  3. Jaws dropped at our Oscar party. We were SO pulling for Viola..Yes, Meryl is marvelous, but Viola was robbed…

    YES

  6. I think Meryl deserved it! She's a wonderful actress! I love every movie she's been in…. Honestly all of the nominees deserved to be in that category it's such a hard decision to choose just one.

  7. I'm so happy that Meryl won. She is the most amazing actress ever! No one comes close to her in my opinion. I think she deserved to win all of the times she was nominated, but guess they have to give it to someone else some of the time to be fair. Congrats Meryl!

America should be proud of having the best movie actress in the world. There is not a character Ms. Streep cannot do well. So many of our actresses have been in the shadow of the British theatre actresses but not Meryl Streep.

  9. Viola should of won that award. As also the Help should of won best movie. Who the hell picks. This will be the last year I see any stupid awards.

  10. Meryl Streep won because it was the politically correct thing to do, and everyone knows how important political correctness is to the Hollywood crowd. Streep's performance belittled a conservative political figure, so how could she not win? Davis was spectacular and should have won. "The Help" was much more entertaining that "The Iron Lady".

  11. 50 plus old white guys.. thats who picks..

If you are referring to Viola Davis, yes. she is a truly gifted actress, but there are those that would sully her achievements. See the link below. now, i have no doubt, the very same people who say she should not have been "exploited" to play a stereotype role (let's rewrite history shall we?) are going to be all up in arms because she didn't win best actress. We're all a bunch of evil racist oppressive bigots apparently.

This woman, (the author) should be barred from public writing.

  15. If she in a movie I will watch it she is and will always be my favorite actress. she can be such a cammilion(hope this is spelled right) the way she goes from a role such as mama mima to the devil wears prada, I could go on all day so I cut out the bull crap and say accept the awards with grace you earned them.

  16. i think rooney mara (lisbeth in the girl with the dragon tatoo) was robbed. she was absolutely riveting in her part

  17. I think BOTH Meryl and Viola gave amazing performances and that it was a very close call… so I don't think of it as anyone being robbed. The votes are the votes. I'm very happy for Meryl and I know Viola will get her chance again. She's got 2 nominations under her belt!!

People, Meryl Streep carried The Iron Lady. Carried it. She was in every single frame of the film; the film WAS her. She killed it. That, my good people, is acting–when you carry the whole film, when your skills and expertise and passion supersede everything else. When you blow people away. Yes. And, frankly, I'm glad she won because I was getting tired of the year-after-year-after-years nominations. It was time. She deserved it. She's been turning in astonishing performances for 35 years. Viola Davis is fantastic, love her, but she's been around for, what, a few years? C'mon. She didn't carry The Help–it was an ensemble piece. No one even thought it was going to do well. She'll win next time up.

  19. She definately earned it! She is one of my favorite actresses. :-)

  20. Meryl wooed audiences with her Award Winning role this year and won over the Academy politics for her Oscar. She may look a bit dusty as the Iron Lady but she’s never looked better than on the Zombie Walk of Fame as a featured diva at http://dregstudiosart.blogspot.com/2011/10/00-countdown-to-halloween-divas-of.html.

I like them both, but I like Viola best.

  22. Sorry Jane I respect your opinion but the awards are not who watched the movie the most it goes to the PERFORMANCE…Viola was stunning absolutely in The Help and yes it was a better over all movie than The Iron lady but Meryl's PERFORMANCE was flawless..In my own opinion..and its only my own opinion…Meryl acted circles around any of the competition..she did not get the award cause the movie was any good or anyone watched it she won because SHE was good..the sward was for Best Actress not most watched by the public…its not a popularity contest

  23. Again Dora I respect your opinion..but this was not who thought which movie was better..it was which actress put in a better PERFORMANCE and to me Meryl was flawless..I agree The Iron Lady was just so-so as a movie but her acting was bar none flawless..she never missed a beat and never missed a note..and Viola is amazing and her time will come but I just think Meryl edged her out..Just my opinion

  24. Meryl deserved it..The movie was just okay but she was so riveting and she never missed a beat! There is nothing she cannot do she is the most seasoned actress in the world I say.

  25. Yes, Meryl won for a biopic, a typical Oscar-baity role. Yes, she wore prosthetics. Yes, the movie itself was patchy in its direction and writing. Yes, she's been nominated 17 times and already won 2. Yes, Viola is a gifted actor and deserves to be recognized. HOWEVER. Meryl completely inhabited the character and moves it from mimicry to impersonation to being a fully realized person. Watch the doctor consultation scene and the the last 10 minutes of The Iron Lady. Viola elevates a broadly drawn character and conveys depth, sorrow, and dignified steeliness, but as amazing as that it, her character throughout the movie had little else to do. Its a shame these two actresses can't be honored at the same time.
