WWE News: Sting Set To Retire After ‘WrestleMania 31’?

After waiting for nearly two decades, the WWE Universe will witness “The Icon” Sting wrestle his first match for the WWE at WrestleMania 31, but his first may also be his last.

In an interview with the Associated Press, the 56-year-old professional wrestling icon discussed signing with the WWE and being happy where he is. He also gave a straight-forward answer in regards to his future. As he prepares to battle “The Game” Triple H in his WWE in-ring debut, he just may be playing the game one final time.

“I’m feeling like this is probably going to be my last one. We’ll see how everyone reacts. If I’m asked to do one more at Survivor Series or maybe even WrestleMania next year, at this point, I would consider it. But realistically, this is going to be my last one.”

While Sting is leaving the door open for another potential match, it appears that his heart is set on hanging up the boots and wiping off the face paint following his colossal showdown with Triple H. However, if one more match does present itself, it has been long known that The Undertaker is Sting’s dream opponent.

As the Inquisitr reported earlier in the week, there is speculation swirling regarding a potential Undertaker vs. Sting match for next year’s WrestleMania. Both men are scheduled to appear on the Monday Night RAW following WrestleMania and some expect a confrontation that sets up the dream match.

In regards to facing the “Deadman,” Sting told the AP that facing him is his “big dream match.” There are also several other factors that could easily sway the “Stinger” toward wrestling one final match.

For starters, WrestleMania 32 will emanate from Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas. Sting lives in the Dallas area while The Undertaker is native of Texas. Therefore, a match between the two men makes for an ideal setting for both men to officially end their careers.

Also, based on Sting’s comments, his current stint with the WWE has him feeling happy that he came aboard and regretful that he didn’t do it sooner.

“It was now or never, that was really it. With hindsight, after rubbing shoulders with the WWE and all the different departments, it’s like, ‘Wow, man, I should have done this a long time ago.’

“Maybe I was wrong all those years ago. But it’s been a great experience for me and I’m glad I’m here.”

But both Sting and the WWE will have to see how former 12-time World Heavyweight champion performs this Sunday to see whether or not another match makes sense. In fairness, Sting hasn’t wrestled since January 23, 2014, which was his last match for IMPACT wrestling. Therefore, a case of ring rust isn’t out of the question.

If Sting comes out of his match Sunday looking anything like his former self, the chances of him wrestling another match increase. If the right storyline, opportunity, and sum of money present itself, the match with Triple H will go from a farewell bout to a warm-up bout.
