‘The X-Files’: Will The Cigarette Smoking Man Return?

As previously reported by the Inquisitr, the popular Fox series, The X-Files, is coming back to television as a six-episode event series. Details are scarce right now, but it has been confirmed that both David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their respective roles as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

With the two leads confirmed, the next thing about which X-Files fans are curious is which other actors will be returning to the series. During an exclusive interview with X-Files News, series creator Chris Carter was questioned about the possibility of bringing back Mitch Pileggi, Robert Patrick, and Annabeth Gish. Carter couldn’t confirm if they would be returning, but he did say he has something in mind for each of them.

“I have ideas for everyone. Their availability is subject to their regular paying jobs. Of course, I’d like to bring everyone possible back, but it’s who’s going to fit into the story and who’s available.”

On Twitter, Mitch Pileggi gave X-Files fans an update on if he would be returning as Walter Skinner.

Over the course of nine seasons and two movies, The X-Files introduced the world to a variety of intriguing characters. One of those was the Cigarette Smoking Man, who was portrayed by William B. Davis. Earlier this year, CBC asked Davis about the possibility of The X-Files getting revived. Davis noted that if the series did come back, he would like it to take place before the events of the final episode, so there would be an opportunity for him to reprise his role.

“The question really for me is — if they reboot the television series, what does that mean dramatically? Do they take the story as far as it went and continue from there? Which, I hope not, because I am dead.”

His character may be dead on the show, but X-Files News did mention that Davis “was consulted about his availability.” So, there is the possibility that he could return to The X-Files in some form, whether it’s flashbacks or if it is set before the Cigarette Smoking Man’s death. And while Carter said he has “ideas” for the new crop of episodes, he didn’t want to give too much away.

“Well, I don’t want to reveal all my tricks, but I can tell you there will be some obvious choices and there will be some surprises.”
