‘Destiny’ Adding Vault Space, But Is It Enough For ‘House Of Wolves’?

As expected, Bungie is adding more Vault space for Destiny on the PlayStation and Xbox with the upcoming 1.12 update. This has been a much requested upgrade since players began maxing out multiple characters and collecting Exotic and Legendary weapons. Is what the developer proposing enough with House of Wolves on the way though?

Currently, the Destiny Vault holds 20 armor pieces, 20 weapons, and 20 general items. While most players have not reached the limits of what the Vault can hold, end game players who have amassed a collection of Exotic and Legendary weapons are maxing out their storage or very close to it.

As you can see in the image below, Bungie is expanding the Vault to hold 24 armor pieces, 36 weapons, and 24 general items.

So that’s where all the Gjallarhorns went.

The 16 slot increase for weapons is welcome and needed from an end game player perspective. Players are constantly juggling weapons between multiple characters and the Vault to make room. However, I get the feeling that end game players will be right back to the current status quo once The House of Wolves is released.

The Dark Below added three new Exotic weapons and nine new Legendary weapons that can be obtained from the Crota’s End raid. That’s not all, though. There is also around another 24 new Legendary weapons added that could be obtained as loot drops and through vendors.

It’s unlikely that many players will collect every single Legendary and Exotic weapon. However, the Exotic and raid weapons are always collector’s items and will push up against the Vault’s max limits when The House of Wolves and its collection of new weapons is released.

It appears that memory limits with the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 may be holding back expanding the Vault further, though. This added space was only made possible by disabling the comparison feature while viewing the Vault screen on the two last-gen consoles. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will retain this feature.

“Different players have different needs, but our goal was to find a solution that could deliver more Vault space to the greatest number of people in the short term,” Bungie Live Team Lead M.E. Chung wrote. “Our challenge was to provide an increase in storage that fit within the memory constraints that limit how many items can be displayed on one screen. This had to be accomplished by a team who is simultaneously working on future content. We opted for making sure that players would have enough slots for all Exotics from Launch through House of Wolves — thus the largest increase in slot space is for weapons.”

The good news is that this is just the first tweak to the Vault. Community Manager David “Deej” Dague implied that future changes are to come, possibly with the Comet release planned for this fall.

This news also implies that the Vault storage will be shared between the Tower and the new Reef social space that is being added in The House of Wolves.

The Destiny 1.1.2 update will be available some time in April. The House of Wolves is currently rumored as a May release.
