The Jennifer Lawrence Mystique movie won't be happening, but what about a recast?

Jennifer Lawrence Mystique Movie: Could Her Departure From ‘X-Men’ Result In Second Recast?

There may not be a Jennifer Lawrence Mystique movie after all. The X-Men actress revealed yesterday that she won’t be putting on the infamous blue body makeup after X-Men: Apocalypse, due on May 27, 2016.

This doesn’t mean that there won’t be a Mystique spin-off though. The people in charge of Fox’s hit mutant franchise declared last year that they were excited about the possibility of spin-off movies from X-Men. These side stories included rumors of Gambit and Mystique, as well as the Deadpool movie currently in production.

Recast characters aren’t anything new to the X-Men franchise, with nearly everybody from the original line-up having been replaced with newer, younger faces for the prequel series which began with X-Men: First Class.

The Jennifer Lawrence Mystique movie isn’t the only one based on a character possibly getting their own movie after a recast. Gambit, previously played by Taylor Kitsch, has been replaced with Channing Tatum (much to many fans’ disappointment). The only characters so far that haven’t been recast are Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) and Rogue (Anna Paquin), interestingly the focuses of the first X-Men.

The original Mystique was played by Rebecca Romjin, but when it came time to make a prequel, they needed a younger actress by default. Now much like her predecessor, Jennifer Lawrence is stepping out after three movies.

Lawrence didn’t give any reason for her departure, but it may have to do with an aversion to the blue body makeup she revealed to Jimmy Fallon last year, a problem that Nicholas Hoult shares as Beast. On that end, Hoult is also rumored to be making his exit after Apocalypse, mirroring the characters’ relationship on the screen.

Much like Sabretooth and Gambit, Mystique’s potential recast could suffer in the eyes of the fans who will miss Lawrence in the role. There might not be a Jennifer Lawrence Mystique movie, but that doesn’t mean the character is done.

If they do recast the character, who do you want to see take on the blue body makeup?
