Dave Mustaine of Megadeth Endorses… Rick Santorum?

dave mustaine endorses rick santorum

So this week, we finally got an answer to the questions “do people actually like Rick Santorum?” and “well, show me one person, then?” when Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine threw his support behind the controversial Republican candidate.

Mustaine has not been a stranger to political controversy himself, having made comments in the past about homosexuality and immigration that have raised hackles. The guitarist is open about his Christian faith as well, and though he voted for Bill Clinton after covering the 1992 Democratic National Convention for the Choose or Lose initiative, Mustaine has mostly indicated a preference for Republican Party ideals in the intervening (gulp) twenty years. (Which kind of calls to mind the old adage among conservatives that if you’re not liberal at 30 you have no heart and if you’re not conservative at 50, you have no brain.)

Santorum has long been controversial, particularly on the subjects of gay rights and women’s rights, and his “Google problem” came from far back in his career after the candidate pissed off sex columnist Dan Savage by justifying denial of gay rights by equating it to bestiality. But none of this bothers Dave Mustaine, who thinks that the fact Santorum attended to his sick child makes him a good fit for the White House.

Like many Republicans, Mustaine blames Obama- and not twenty years of looting the middle class- as the genesis of America’s problems. He begins:

“I’m just hoping that whatever is in the White House next year is a Republican. I can’t bear to watch what’s happened to our great country. Everybody’s got their head in the sand. Everybody in the industry is like, ‘Oh, Obama’s doing such a great job…’ I don’t think so. Not from what I see.”

Although he expresses distrust of Mitt Romney’s wealth hoarding, says Newt Gingrich hasn’t shed his “angry little man” image and believes Ron Paul has a narrow but dangerous streak, Mustaine believes Santorum is America’s best way forward in 2012. He says, however, that he is new to the Santorum surge and was not always aware of the candidate:

“Earlier in the election, I was completely oblivious as to who Rick Santorum was, but when the dude went home to be with his daughter when she was sick, that was very commendable.”

The musician says, however, it’s Santorum’s “clean” image that is really winning the Megadeth guitarist over:

“Also, just watching how he hasn’t gotten into doing these horrible, horrible attack ads like Mitt Romney’s done against Newt Gingrich, and then the volume at which Newt has gone back at Romney… You know, I think Santorum has some presidential qualities, and I’m hoping that if it does come down to it, we’ll see a Republican in the White House… and that it’s Rick Santorum.”

Do you agree with Dave Mustaine, and think Rick Santorum is America’s best shot at recovery?

Megadeth was my favorite band in the early 90's, but as far as wanting a "Republican" in the whitehouse goes I don't entirely agree. It's gotten to be Ron Paul, whether he's elected as a Republican or 3rd party. All the other Repbulicrats are establishment puppets just like Obama, only in a different packaging.

Roland- Yes, he is so dumb that he was kicked out of Metallica and spent years being bitter about it.

  3. Diane McAfee

ever listen to any Megadeth songs Roland? the lyrics are very profound…Dave is far from being dumb…he's real…he doesn't hide his head in the sand and he's not afraid to voice his opinion…too many cowards out there worrying about offending someone (liberals)…how is anyone supposed to respect that?

Re: Do you agree with Dave Mustaine, and think Rick Santorum is America’s best shot at recovery?
    Answer: Yes.

  5. Kathie Wilson

The very fact that this is a serious question, makes me shudder at how far from the ideals of the Constitution we have traveled. Obama is no better – signing the NDAA was the worst thing he could have done if he wanted to keep my vote. He did it, and I will not vote for him again. But if Rick Santorum wins the GOP nomination, we might as well have traveled back to the days when those who declined to worship the local deity were thrown into the stocks, and burned at the stake. This man is a zealot an unabashed bigot, a fearmonger, a misogynist, and a creep – and he's a serious contender for the highest political office in the Country? O Canada……………….

  6. Rob Vinciguerra

This just confirms for me that Dave Mustaine is worthless. He still cries about being kicked out of Metallica. Well, Dave, it's because you suck. You suck as a musician and fail as a person.

POLL: How do you feel about Megadeth front man Dave Mustaine endorsing Rick Santorum?

I'm not a liberal, Diane, and I vote Republican and Democrat. I don't want "a Republican" in the white house nor do I want "a Democrat" in the white house. I want the best candidate in the white house. When I see this great trait of Santorum of supporting his daughter when he's sick vs. this horrendous trait of Santorum wishing to deny equal rights to nearly 5% of the U.S. population (gays/lesbians), it's easy to make a decision on him. His view is narrow at best. His view is perfectly fine if it only governs him. But I take affront when his view govens 300 million people and that view is so askew.

  8. Kevin Beatty

by the way – I have every Megadeth album. Seen them in concert twice. If Dave persists with this: he'll never get a dime more out of me. Every $ I would have spent on Megadeth gear will go to the Human Rights Campaign or similar organization.

  9. Robert Troise

he's going to vote for Rick Santorum because he took care of his sick child and doesn't run negative ads towards other candidates? stick to making shitty dated music Dave, seriously.

  10. Bill Cole

I love how he say's he, "like how clean" Santorum is. He has no right commenting how clean anyone is. Why was he kicked out of Metallica again? Oh that's right, because he drank and partied too much. For METALLICA! That is saying something. So keep on calling the kettle black Mustaine. I hate Obama too, but Santorum has no chance on getting the nomination and even less of a chance winning the White House.

  11. Annabelle Leigh Petermeier

Yet at Megadeth concerts they'd display Anarchy symbols? What a bunch of sell outs.

  12. Kathie Wilson

I can't respect a man who feels that women are second-class citizens, and gays are 'evil', and who wants to use taxpayer dollars to teach religion in public schools. I can't respect a man who insists that every woman should be required to gestate her every pregnancy – except, of course, for his own wife – and that we ban abortion for every woman in every circumstance – except of course for his own wife. Pardon me whilst I vomit. As far as whether or not celebrities 'should' or 'shouldn't' come out publicly regarding their political views, they have as much right as anyone to free speech. The fact that a celebrity's opinion may hold more weight with voters (as a result of their 'celebrity status') than the voter's own research is disgusting. JMO

  13. Jeff Sonnefield

I don't want a "Republican" in the White House….I want a conservative. Obama has taken this country into the ditch and has engaged in un-constitutional activities. For that fact alone he should be impeached.

  14. Jenny Rhodes

I have liked Megadeth for years. I love to see That Mr. Mustaine has stand up values. Hard Work notttt Hand Outs!

  15. Eric Palson

almost as deep as Dylan lol.My dog has a higher IQ than him and his guitar style is just fast noise

  16. Oswald Anastasia

Dave Mustaine, too egotistical to play with Cliff Burton (the rest of Metallica are irrelevant). Dave Mustaine, the "christian" who shouted racial slurs from the stage repeatedly in 1988. Dave Mustaine, the dirtbag who holds the record for being thrown out of the Roxy. Dave Mustaine, the genius who compared Dave Murray to Yngwie Malmsteen. Dave Mustaine, the guy who brought us the overdubbed speed guitar solo that has the harmonic perfection of a jack-in-the-box. Yeah, if it's all the same to everyone, I'll forgo Dave's presidential wisdom…. Maybe someone should interview Eddie VanHalen about quantum physics.

  17. Dave Ward

Hey Diane if you think Megadeth lyrics are profound, put the joint down and walk-don't run to the library. Quick. Hide in the stacks and when they lock up for the night, you'll have the whole place to yourself. Good luck with your education.

  18. Frank Teers

Jenny Rhodes We've got to stand up and be heard loud and clear this election. I am sick at the direction our govt. and complacent, welfare sucking population is dragging our once great country. I didn't give 4 years of my life to the USMC to see this happen. Do whatever you can in your area to encourage people to think, study history (world) and make a truly informed vote. Thank you Jenny.

  19. Kathie Wilson

Answer – hell no. If a religious zealot, who exemplifies all the hypocrisy, misogyny, and bigotry of the Christian religion, is the best shot at our 'recovery' this country is in very deep trouble. As it is, we have absolutely NO candidates who have the Constitution as their platform – especially not Santorum, OR Obama.

  20. Michael Gillespie

"article" is slanted -"Mustaine blames Obama- and not twenty years of looting the middle class- as the genesis of America’s problems" anymore it seems you're only allowed to speak up if you're a liberal.

  21. Anonymous

Kathie Wilson, the only bigot I see here is you, you closed minded moron. I guess anyone who is a christian is a religious zealot/extremist in your opinion. I'm sick of people like you.

  22. Nick Muto

Pretty sure he is making way more money than you will ever see in your lifetime. Now go get dressed before you are late for the metallica jazz fest.

  23. Mark Nicodemo

Kathie Wilson You appear guilty of that which you condemn and you don't even realize it.

  24. Steven W. Ellison

Dude, the Christian religion is what shaped the culture of this country. If not for that you wouldn't even have the right to make your claims. Where do you think the idea of human rights came from? Trust me, it wasn't the Qur'an.

  25. Anonymous

Dave Mustaine is a great Musician, but his pick for president bites. Ron Paul 2012!

  26. Scott Goldman

Jeff Sonnefield, So what part of the economy crashed in September of 08 was the fault of Barack Obama? Bush committed War Crimes with allowing torture, Took us to war under false pretenses, Spying on American Citizens, Breaking these federal laws, The Telecommunications Privacy Act of 1984 (TPA)
    - The Electronic Communications Privacy Act of 1986
    (ECPA)
    - The Privacy Act of 1974
    - The Wire And Electronic Communications Interception
    And Interception Of Oral Communications
    - The Wireless Telecommunications Privacy Act of 2000
    - The Freedom of Information Act
Violation of the 5th amendment. So again, are you just a partisan hack or do you suggest holding all politicians to equal standards?

  27. Donovan J Duncan

Seriously? You don't even like metal, why are you on this post? Doesn't everyone wish their ex-wives would just stick to their own interests instead of crowding up the ex-husband? I divorced you so I wouldn't have to hear your opinion anymore.

  28. Norm Higgs

If your head was not completely buried in your a$$, Kim, it would be quite obvious to you that a lot of people like Rick Santorum (just not lefties like yourself) and you would not have made yourself look like a complete idiot by 'asking' those two questions in your first paragraph. Here's a clue for you – nearly half of the general population (around 40%) describe themselves as politically conservative, so it would make sense to any thinking being (regardless of their politics) that a large portion of them would 'like' him. Maybe you should come to emotional terms with that fact, instead of living in denial.

You should probably stick to blogging about leftist candidates in the future – less chance of making yourself look like a fool (slightly).

  29. Kathie Wilson

scottcarthew , anyone who wants to make religion the focal point of a Presidential campaign in the United States of America IS a religious extremist. Regardless of which religion he or she wants to shove down the throats of the rest of us. Christians seem to be the ones clamoring for the Government to officially recognize their belief system. I don't see any Hindus, Muslims, Native Americans or Buddhists looking to teach their beliefs in public schools. That's what religious schools and CHURCHES are for. If you want your children to believe in a certain deity, and not have access to the theory of evolution? Teach them at home, at your own expense.

  30. Diane McAfee

sorry to disappoint ya Dave, but I don't smoke pot…and you're the one who needs the education…not my fault you don't understand the meaning behind the words…

  31. Kathie Wilson

Gregor Southard , I'm as real as it gets. Santorum is a menace to women, anyone whose religious beliefs differ from his own, and all who don't identify as heterosexual. To think that he has a real shot at the Presidency of the US is to think this country wants to collectively wipe it's posterior with the Constitution.
This country is founded on 'We the People' rather than "Not YOU people". Rights are for everyone.

  32. Shane Riddle

Kathie Wilson You're such a dumb ass. And your head is so far up your own ass, I find it hard to believe you're not an Obama plant, despite your preemptive protestations to the contrary.

You're currently in a lot more danger of being locked up without trail by Obama than you'll ever be under Rick Santorum. At least he has some respect for the Constitution.

  33. Jeff Sonnefield

Scott Goldman1) The economy crashed in 08 not because of anything Bush did. The economy crashed because the housing market crashed that became a domino effect. This was because of a little liberal law called the Community Reinvestment Act that caused Banks to make loans to people who couldn't afford them.
    2) If Bush supported torture it is only because it fits a liberal definition of torture (ie water boarding, or panties on the heads of terrorist in Abu Ghraib etc…lol)
Bush went to war not on false pretenses but on available information at the time and there were weapons of mass destruction found…not nukes but others such as nerve gas, mustard gas etc. And Saddam was found to be actively searching for yellow cake uranium for a nuke. The war in Iraq is completely justified.
    3) As far as the wire tapping charge, the federal appeals court found it legal for intelligence gathering. Even your precious Obama supportes wire tapping.
So it would appear you are wrong on all counts… as is usual for liberals.
    Next argument……..

  34. Diane McAfee

I didn't say I was voting for Santorum Kevin…I don't follow any political party and quite frankly I wish our country would rid itself of politicians…most tell the people what they want to hear to get the vote and once they're in office they don't follow through on their promises…doesn't matter which party they're affiliated with, they're all dishonest in my opinion…so I do my homework and when it comes down to the final candidates, I vote the lesser of 2 evils…sad to say, but what else can you do? My comment was simply defending a man that I've grown to respect…like I said, too many people are afraid of offending others and they are the unhappiest people I've ever known…at least Dave Mustaine isn't a fake..

  35. Paul Madison

Kathie Wilson You must be blind to the current downfall of our society!!! Let's leave "gay" out of the conversation. If people would simply abide by the Law of Morality, then this thread wouldn't even be valid. I home school my kids because I don't want someone teaching my kid sex education and force feeding it down their throat. I don't have cable television because I don't want them to see how ridiculous our society has become. If Rick Santorum makes it as the Republican nominee, then you bet I will vote for him.

  36. Kathie Wilson

Mark Nicodemo, how so? I have no problem with Christians or Christianity – as long as they keep their religion out of the legislative process. If the Christian church wants input to the workings of the state, it can give up its tax-exempt status, and start contributing to the public coffers from which it wants to draw.

  37. Noah Mormino

Kathie Wilson Ever heard of Sharia law? Muslims most certainly do want their religion to influence goverment policy.

  38. Jim Heywood

its so funny to see how many people think Dave is stupid or doesnt know what he is talking about just put him and Dee Snider in office you people wouldnt know what to do

  39. Randall Gilbert

The housing market crashed because of a policy started by Bill Clinton persuading banks to make loans to people who were no financially able to pay the loans off.

  40. Jeff Sonnefield

It appears my response to scott didn't take. He is completely wrong in his response.
The economy crash was started by the housing market collapse. The housing market crash was caused by a liberal program called the Community Reinvestment Act that caused banks to make loans to people who couldn't afford them. So don't blame this crappy economy on Bush…the fault lies squarely in the laps of the liberal dems.
The wire tapping Bush began was found to be legal for intelligence gathering by a federal appeals court, so once a gain you are wrong Scott. Even your precious Obama supports the wire tapping…oops!
An when you are talking torture….its only torture by the liberals definition so therefore that argument is irrelevant. Water boarding was successful in attaining information that led to the killiing of Bin Laden…another argument of yours shot down…so sorry.
So Scott once again you have proven that liberals always have their facts wrong.
    Try again.

Jenny Rhodes "hard work and no handouts?" What was over 700 billion in bank bail-outs?? Did Goldman Sacs and AIG and Bank of America work for that money??? I bet you're working VERY VERY hard now since the real estate bubble burst……maybe cause of the banks I just mentioned….maybe they had something to do with it?????

  42. Matt Farmer

yes, I've been a Megadeth fan for year and Dave's lyrics were very profound… when I was 14. As I got older I realized they were rife with bad metaphors, corny rhymes and tired cliches. But damn, the guy can SHRED!

  43. Kathie Wilson

Noah Mormino Of course I've heard of it – it's blatantly Unconstitutional. S ois most of Santorum's religiously motivated legislation.

  44. Brian Loysen

Yes…because the mark of high intelligence comes from thinking anyone with a different opinion is dumb. Or..do you have real reasons there Mr. Enlightened?

  45. Frank Teers

lornewoods10 do some research and you will find that our wonderful representatives in the house and the senate, headed up by Barney Frank, but going back to the Carter admin., forced these banks and mortgage lenders to take on loans that they would have never approved without the threat of Federal penalties. It did not start with a loan committee decision to underwrite loans they knew would not perform. Wisely, these banks then packaged up these crap loans into mortgage backed securities and sold them as investments. Most of these packaged product investments went to Sovereign Nations and Institutional Investors and put into diversified portfolios. When our housing market collapsed, so did those investments. Investors in anything, but US Treasuries know that all investments come with risk or there would be no chance for reward. Unfortunately, our Fed is now of the mindset that no one should have to undertake that inherent risk and threw your and my tax dollars at this collapse and the domino's continue to fall today. How do I know this to be true? I was a bond portfolio manager for over 20 years and specialized in AAA backed securities. lornewoods10, do not speak unless you are certain of the facts.

  46. Noah Mormino

Kathie Wilson Constitutionality of all law is debatable. The democrats have taken many liberties with the constitution. Likewise GW did with the patriot act. Keep in mind such terrible things as slavery were at one point in history "Constitutional". I do not agree with Santorum on all his points, but his ideas about what is appropriately constitutional is no different from any other presidential candidate, except possibly for Ron Paul.

  47. Andrew Raines

Yeah, cause anyone who doesn't think like you shouldn't exist!

Vote Obama in 2012 cause I love the 1.7 Trillion dollar deficit budgets he keeps writing every year!

  48. Andrew Raines

Yeah, cause this is what MSNBC told me…. All Republicans are bigots, racists, xenaphobes, gay bashers, and women haters…. There, I can now safely vote Democrat.

  49. Andrew Raines

Kathie Wilson you need to take care of that beard. Secondly, Islam is WAAAAAYYYYY better than Christianity cause they just stone their gays to death, and drown their daughters in the family swiming pool for disgracing their family, and kill anyone who tries to leave Islam or says a single bad word about Islam.

Yet, here you can bash everything pertaining to Christians and still sleep safely in your bed, why not grow a pair and take on the real threat to freedom…. the current spead and protection of Islam

  50. Andrew Raines

See people, this is what happens when you come out publically against Obama. See what Dave Mustaine is enduring??? Do you want that for yourself????? NO??? Then shut up unless you can say something nice about Obama!

  51. Andrew Raines

Yes, so dumb that Megadeth tours with Metallica in the BIG 4 tour. Wow, those big checks he gets from playing stadiums must make him real dumb.

  52. Dinsdale Piranha

Santorum was asked in one of the debates about an anti-2nd amendment measure he had voted for and he said it was "supported by the NRA". So either he is a fool or he thinks that you are.

  53. Diane McAfee

Uh huh…and you also have huge misconceptions of who Christians are, as evidenced by your other posts…you obviously believe everything you hear instead of seeking facts…and I could care less if a celebrity endorses a politician…I agree it's ridiculous if that's what people are basing their vote on…but that doesn't sway my vote one way or the other…I vote my conscience and what I believe to be best for our country…

  54. Jeff Sonnefield

I am a big fan of Megadeth and I would have never thought Dave Mustaine would endorse such an asshole,
I would of pictured him endorsing Ron Paul. Go figure..
