Amanda Knox Acquittal Could Be Overturned, Prosecutors Want to Retry Case

Amanda Knox retrial

Amanda Knox and one-time boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito have been free for four months after their imprisonment for years in Italy and the subsequent shocking acquittal that set them free, but prosecutors in the case are trying to overturn the controversial decision.

Knox has since returned to her hometown of Seattle after her release last fall, and has been keeping a relatively low profile following her prison ordeal in Italy. But she is undoubtedly going to be sought out by media following this latest development, which could see her tried in absentia by the Italian courts. If the request is granted, Knox could be extradited to Italy- but her lawyers feel that the possibility of such an outcome is remote and far in the future.

One of Knox’s lawyers, Luciano Ghirga, had this to say:

“We’re not considering that possibility; for us she has been acquitted. That’s how the system works, but for us it’s a hypothesis far into the future.”

Another of Knox’s lawyers, Carlo Dalla Vedova, said the development is painful not only for Knox and Sollecito, but for the Kercher family as well:

“I am sorry for the two kids… But I am especially sorry for Meredith Kercher; silence would have been better.”

Although new evidence will not be presented in the proposed appeal, it is expected that the old evidence will be held up to scrutiny in the case yet again. And while Dalla Vedova says Knox is not terribly worried as she believes her innocence has “been proven,” he said her lawyers are “just sorry she has to deal with all this again.”

  1. All I can say is that the US government must not allow Amanda to be returned to Italy. This whole issue of Amanda's guilt is still promoted by the prosecuitor who has been identified as the culprit in her case all along. So it all rides on our government to now extridite her to Italy. Good luck Amanda. You have been harrassed enough. You need a life.

  3. Not really. More like that crazy prosecutor Giuliano Mignini can't let it go because he embarrassed himself so badly (satanic rituals anyone?). The guy is nuts and has something to prove. This is not justice. This man has a self-serving agenda and shouldn't even be a Magistrate in such a position of power over peoples' lives. He has been in trouble in the past for abusing his post. If I were Raffaele I would get far far away from Italy and Europe. Leave these kids alone. There was no evidence linking these two to this crime.

If you read the prosecutors history, you will see that he's one of those lawyers that can't stand losing a case, and will not accept defeat. Or rather he's just one of those guys we call a dick, because he probably has no dick. He's butt ugly and no beautiful woman has probably given him the time of day. His whole focus on painting Amanda as "evil" is really quite pathetic too. He probably can't stand that this young beautiful American girl came into his country and made him look like a loser. If anyone is evil it's that dude.

She should be able to file charges against the corrupt Italian legal system. They have already stolen four years of her life and now they are trying for more. No way would I ever set foot in Italy. What a bunch of crooks.

  7. The little innocent Jesuit. She was guilty from the get go and hopefully appeal to prosecute that little Jesuit sociopath will not be overturned.
