Navy SEAL Dies During Training Accident In California After Parachute Malfunctions [Video]

A tragic training accident in California has left a Navy SEAL dead. Sailors were participating in a parachute training exercise when one parachute malfunctioned, resulting in the death of the SEAL. The unnamed sailor is the second Navy SEAL to die this year during parachute training.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the accident occurred around 9:00 a.m. this morning near Perris, California. The report indicates that the Navy SEAL died from injuries sustained during the parachute jump training exercise. It is unknown at this time exactly what type of malfunction occurred with the parachute.

The CBS video above shows the scene shortly after the accident. In the video, you can see a body with an American flag draped over it. Emergency responders could be seen carrying the flag-covered body away in a white van.

Naval Special Warfare Group One, the SEALs group which the sailor was assigned, released a statement noting that the name of the sailor will not be released until 24 hours after the next-of-kin is notified. Chief Mass Communication Specialist Chief (EXW) Brandon L. Raile noted that the accident occurred during a “standard training evolution,” but did not elaborate.

Sadly, this is not the first Navy SEAL death during parachute training this year. Back in January, a Navy SEAL died during training in Florida. William Marston, 31, died in Florida when witnesses say something “flew off his parachute.” As a result, Marston landed hard on the ground and died from his injuries.

The name of the Navy SEAL killed in today’s California parachute training has yet to be released. The Navy said they will provide further details after the next of kin are fully notified.
