Fans can watch the Notre Dame vs. Northeastern basketball game live online and see if the first game of the second round can produce the first big upset of the 2015 NCAA Tournament.
The Irish have rolled to 29 wins this year, the most under coach Mike Brey. They capped the fantastic season with a win in the ACC Tournament, and will now play against Colonial Athletic Association champion Northeastern.
The game tips off at 12:15 p.m. ET from Pittsburgh, the first action on Thursday.
Fans who watch the Notre Dame vs. Northeastern game live online will get a chance to see if the Irish can put behind their past upsets, which Brey said should not be an issue this year.
“I don’t lose a lot of sleep on it, maybe because I’m an older coach now and I have a great contract,” the Fighting Irish coach said. “But I do feel, going in, this group has the makings of being different because of how they played the regular season.”
For Northeastern, it is the first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1991. The Huskies have made seven other appearances but won just once, a 90-87 victory over Long Island in 1984.
But the No. 14 seed has been lucky in each of the past two years, with two teams advancing to the Round of 32. Last year No. 14 Mercer beat Duke and in 2013 Harvard defeated New Mexico.
The game will be familiar for Brey, who used to coach against Northeastern during his time at the helm of their CAA rival Delaware.
“I have a lot of respect for Bill Coen, their coach, and how they play, especially on the offensive end. This is your typical mid-major team. I had a couple of them at Delaware, older guys that know how to play together and have won together for a while,” he said. “I told our guys, it’s like an ACC game. We have to prepare like it’s an ACC game.”
The feeling is mutual. Coen said he has a lot of respect for Notre Dame’s explosive offense, which is averaging just under 79 points a game.
“Coach (Mike) Krzyzewski hasn’t figured it out (for Duke) and (North Carolina’s) Roy Williams hasn’t figured it out. I don’t know if I can figure it out by Thursday,” Coen joked after practice at the Cabot Center. “It’s going to take our best.. . . We are going to need guys to have multiple efforts on every possession. Guys are going to have to help guys. Guys are going to have to shrink the floor and then recover to shooters, box out the weakside. We are going to need maximum effort to cover the floor.”
