Tennessee Couple Leave $36 Tip On A $28 Check For A Very Special Reason, Leaves Waitress In Tears

Claire Hudson, a waitress at a local burger joint, was left in tears when she read a note that a couple left behind on the credit card receipt issued to them. The couple had tipped Claire a generous $36 on a bill amount that was less than $30! While the amount of money that the diners left behind for Claire was not very significant, especially compared to what we have seen and heard of earlier, what made the $36 tip special was the reason.

According to ABC News, Claire was working a double shift at Mac’s Grub Shak when the unidentified diners came in.

“It was actually a really slow day and then this couple came in. I didn’t even realize the tip until after they were gone,” Claire later told ABC News.

According to Claire, the couple dined as usual and went away, but not before tipping her a generous amount — more than the actual bill.

“I would’ve liked to have caught them and said ‘hey this is awesome!,’ They did it anonymously and it was really sweet,” Hudson said.

It was only later that Claire figured the touching reason behind the $36 tip. The couple had left a handwritten note behind the credit card receipt to the waitress that explained the reason for their generosity.

It read, “Today is my brother’s b-day. He would have been 36 today. Every year I go eat his favorite meal (hot dogs) and tip the waitress his age. Happy B-day Wes.”

Hudson said she was reduced to tears when she read it.

“I had to go in the back of the restaurant and compose myself before I went out to my other tables,” she added.

A few hours after the diners left, Hudson thought the diners’ generosity and the intention behind it needed a wider audience. She posted a photo of the handwritten note and the story behind it on Reddit. When she woke up the next day, to her astonishment, her post had received over 250,000 upvotes and was displayed on the front page. The image she had shared was on Imgur and was seen by over 1.5 million people.

After the story went viral, Claire and the owner of Mac’s Grub Shak are trying to track the couple who dined there and left the note. This time though, they want to do it for a special reason.

“We want to see what his brother Wes liked on his hot dogs because we’d like to name a hot dog after him,” Claire says.
