Maine Senator Says Obama Is Part of ISIS: Should The Senator Resign?

Republican State Senator Michael Willette from Presque Isle made a post on Facebook that started an uproar in Washington. Press Herald reports that Willette posted a picture of Obama from Conservative News Daily with a caption reading, “Why haven’t I done anything about ISIS? Because I’ll deal with them at the family reunion.”

While the post was intended to be humorous, there are many people, conservatives and liberals alike, who question if he truly has America’s best interest at heart.

However, on the opposite side of the spectrum are those who are die-hard Obama fans who were truly appalled by the post, which crudely implies that Obama’s family is associated with the ISIS terrorist group responsible for mass murders and beheadings, thus criticizing Senator Willette and going so far as to demand his resignation.

Senator Willette, who actually voted for President Obama in 2008, says he has become frustrated with his policies and his actions over the years. Willette even converted from being a Democrat to a Republican.

Willette commented on the Facebook post, as reported by the Press Herald, stating, “I’ve been very good over the last year and a half about not posting things about Obama, but this one was too good to pass up. I promise this will be the last one for some time.”

According to WCBV, the Maine Democratic Party wasted no time in asking Senator Willette to resign his position, stating Willette has a “prolific online history of racism and bigoted remarks.” However, one would question, would these be the same people who always scream “freedom of speech?”

The Democratic Party quickly brought up Senator Willette’s past comments he made on a public blog, in which he made statements that revealed his less than affectionate feelings towards Muslims, and alluded that part of Obama’s administration were part of the Muslim brotherhood.

Senator Willette has grievously apologized to his colleagues for his Facebook post and his comment. He even went a step further and promised his “mistake in judgement” would not be repeated, according to his statement to WCBV.

“I think many of us can identify with the temptation to not listen to our better angels — and instead to lash out publicly against those with whom we disagree. As a legislator, I am held to a higher standard — we all are — and we need to show restraint.”

Senator Willette went on further to say that he doesn’t feel the need to resign, while Senate Democratic leader Justin Alfond believes that decision should be left up to his constituents.
