Apple Watch Launch: This 18-Karat Rose Gold Model Costs $17,000

Apple released the very first Apple Watch late last year, but it only started at $349 to start. On Monday, Apple CEO Tim Cook included a pricing structure for the Apple Watch, saying that the high-end Apple Watch Edition models would cost a pretty penny. The Inquisitr previously reported that the watches would range from $349 to $10,000, until now. Cook also revealed that there were larger versions of the Apple Watch that will cost more than $10,000.

Introducing the 38mm 18-Karat Rose Gold model for $17,000. This watch has an 18-karat rose gold case with a rose gray modern buckle. It’s currently the most expensive watch that Apple is offering at the moment. The tech giant is also offering a 38mm 18-karat yellow gold case with a bright red modern buckle, if you don’t like rose gold or you find that watch too feminine.

There is very little information about the watch on the Apple website. It comes in three sizes: small (135-150mm), medium (145-165mm), and large (160-180mm). You can’t just wear it for looks, though. This new Apple Watch requires the use of the iPhone 5 or higher with the latest version of iOS.

Cook said that the watch will last for 18 hours “across a range of activities.” It will also include a few popular apps such as Instagram, Shazam, and Uber. Users can look forward to some news on other third-party Apple Watch apps that will be made available in the next few days.

The steep price of this 18-karat Apple Watch proves that the company is looking to compete with luxury watchmakers, not smartwatch makers like Pebble, Samsung, or Sony. It’ll be interesting to see if this new strategy will make or break Apple in the end. As previously mentioned, Apple currently has the most expensive smartwatch on the market, while Google is on the lower end of the market, says the Guardian.

The Apple Watch line goes on sale on April 24, with a preview beginning on April 10. This new device is expected to go on sale in the following nine countries: “Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, the UK and US,” as reported by the Guardian.

Would you ever pay $17,000 for an Apple Watch, if you had the money?
