Hawkeye Is Latest Avenger To Join ‘Captain America: Civil War’

Next year’s Captain America: Civil War is quickly becoming a bigger deal than this year’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron. After confirming Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson for the Captain America sequel, The Hollywood Reporter is now confirming that Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye will be joining the fray as well.

That means as of right now, only two of the six original Avengers (Thor and Hulk) are unconfirmed. While that particular pair are unlikely to join the film, let’s not forget that Falcon (Anthony Mackie) and the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) are also poised to return to the franchise along with newcomer Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman). Then there are the strong rumors that Captain America: Civil War will be Spider-Man’s debut in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe.

Despite the name “Captain America” in the title, it’s clear that Civil War will be no slouch in the fan service department, and like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, it’s likely to shake the very foundation of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Hawkeye’s role in the film is currently unknown, as The Hollywood Reporter offhandedly mentioned it while outlining actor Jeremy Renner’s shooting schedule, which includes the scifi film Story Of Your Life. We’ll likely have a better idea of what to expect from the character after we see where Age Of Ultron leaves him. All that being said, Hawkeye’s involvement in Civil War may surprise a few people. It has long been hinted at and speculated that an Avenger will likely bite the dust in Avengers: Age Of Ultron, and since Renner’s sharpshooter seems to be the weak link in the bunch, he seemed prime for the chopping block. Fortunately for Hawkeye fans, this doesn’t appear to be the case.

Another detail that Screen Rant notes that apart from his cameo in Thor, Captain America: Civil War will mark Hawkeye’s first real involvement in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe outside of an Avengers film (sadly his involvement in Captain America: The Winter Soldier ended up on the cutting room floor). Despite his extended screen time in the first team-up film, it has mostly been agreed upon that Hawkeye’s role a zombie man for most of Avengers was a bit of a disservice to the character. Hopefully between Age Of Ultron and Civil War, the right steps will be taken to rectify that.

Are you looking forward to the return of Jeremy Renner’s Character in Captain America: Civil War, or are there too many other big names for you to pick?
