Paula Patton Says Split With Robin Thicke Has Been ‘Challenging,’ But She’s Moving On

Paula Patton says her split from husband Robin Thicke has been “challenging” but is taking a measure of hope after the very public breakup.

The 39-year-old Patton ended her nine-year marriage to the R&B singer last year after some very public allegations of cheating. In an interview with Good Morning America, Paula Patton admitted that the split has been difficult to get through.

“I’m doing really well. I mean, the honest truth is it has been challenging, but it’s been a year of growth,” Patton told co-host Robin Roberts. “Lots of healing and learning about all new things.”

Robin Thicke may not have been helping the matter. Shortly after Paula separated, he released an album called Paula, an effort to win back his high school sweetheart. The album, which fell flat both with critics and fans, was headlined by the single “Win Her Back.”

But shortly after that effort failed, Robin Thicke took a different tack and started dating April Love Geary, a 20-year-old model. Geary stirred a bit of controversy when she posted photographs of herself with Robin in the bedroom he once shared with Paula Patton.

As SheKnows pointed out at the time, the sequence of events didn’t look too good for Robin Thicke.

“So, to review: Thicke allegedly cheated on Patton and then made her sit through the disturbing gyrations of her then-husband during the 2013 VMAs, endure the bizarre video for ‘Blurred Lines’ in which fully nude models strut around Thicke, suffer through his other odd behavior, listen to him beg to get her back and, then, he ultimately makes her watch as he romances a teenage girl from her former bedroom. Yeesh.”

But now Paula Patton said she is working past the split and focusing on the couple’s four-year-old son, Julian.

“I’ve come out of it stronger. My son’s happy and I’m very — I feel like everything happens for a reason. And then you have to move on and grow from there,” Patton said.

“The thing is you can’t wallow in sadness or stay in bed when you have a child. And they’re so full of life and wonder. And he brings me so much joy.”

Paula Patton said the split hasn’t completely destroyed her relationship with Robin Thicke. She said the two maintain an amicable partnership, largely for the sake of their child.
