‘League Of Legends’ Developer Made ‘Fortune’s’ 100 Best Companies To Work For List

League of Legends isn’t a stranger to getting into non-game related news resources, but today it seems that it hit a jackpot. According to Fortune magazine, the game’s developer, Riot Games, is not just among the best 100 companies to work for – it almost made it into the top 10. The League of Legends’ creator ended up placing 13th on the list.

LoL is a representative of a relatively new genre called MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) that is specifically aimed at the multiplayer crowd. Right now, it is also the most-played PC game in the world, leaving the closest contenders, such as World of Warcraft, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, and DOTA 2, far behind. According to the Inquisitr, it has been occupying this position for 10 months in a row, and it doesn’t seem that the situation is about to change.

“League of Legends was released in October of 2009 by the California-based Riot Games, and it has since exploded in popularity, dominating the number one spots in terms of both active players and viewers. It has also helped provide a large boost to the viewership of competitive eSports, which features other popular games like Starcraft and Mortal Kombat.”

Although it would be an exaggeration to say that LoL single-handedly brought the world of competitive eSports to the attention of general public — it was working on the ground that has been prepared for years by games like Starcraft, Warcraft III, Counter-Strike, and DOTA — but it certainly played a huge role in turning eSports from a niche hobby to a huge international industry with its own rules, organizations, and communities.

Riot Games are doing very good indeed right now. According to Cinema Blend, the company provides excellent bonuses to its employees, including open PTO, weekly visits from certified masseuses, and more. They are also constantly on the lookout for more talent.

“The last few years have been huge for Riot. Fueled by LoL’s climbing popularity, the company added around 250 jobs in 2014. And judging by the abundance of postings on Riot’s job board, that number is still on the rise.”

However, it pays to remember that game development has never been a very stable industry, and fortunes are just as easily made here as they are lost. A lot of companies suddenly rise to the top with one breakaway hit, only to descend into obscurity and bankruptcy just a few years later.

But so far, the League of Legends developer is doing good, and hopefully, will continue doing so.
