‘Scandal’ Season 4 Spoilers: Mellie’s Sister, Lena Dunham’s Episode, And Returning Characters

A Girls star is coming, Mellie’s sister is dropping by, and two characters (one who died) are returning in the remaining episodes of Scandal Season 4. Oh, and those first two things are happening in the same episode. So what kind of craziness is in store Thursday nights?

First of all, good times are not ahead for Mellie, who seems to be on track for what she wants: the presidency. In the latest Scandal episode, Fitz made good on their deal and found someone to be his new vice president who would not stand in her way after his term. When Cyrus looks to someone bold, a female Republican governor from New Mexico who speaks out during the tragic shooting of a 17-year-old African American by a police officer — the first job Olivia is hired to “handle” after her return — Fitz leaks her name to the press and skeletons come out of the closet. So who is going to be the next VP? Susan Ross, who doesn’t want to take over Fitz’s job. She’s perfect in Mellie’s eyes.

However, just as that seems to be working out for her, TV Guide has reported that Mellie’s sister is going to be appearing in the March 19 Scandal episode, the same one featuring guest stars Lena Dunham and Lauren Bowles. However, Bellamy Young didn’t reveal who’s playing her sister when she teased what to expect – and don’t expect Mellie to be happy to see her.

“Mellie’s past and where she comes from is not at all what she wants you to think. She is living her present. When her sister comes, it’s a little mini Armageddon. It’s not a happy reunion by any means.”

It sounds like her sister will do what many family members do and reveal some secrets about their past, secrets that Mellie does not want to ruin the image she has made for herself, Young teased.

“You can tell this about people in life when you meet them. You can tell that they’re working hard and you can see that sort of effort. That seems to come out of their own low self-esteem and then whatever perhaps difficult circumstances they grew up in. That’s definitely true for Mellie. All the overarching propriety and all the judginess and all the perfect pearls is coming from somewhere, and it’s fun to find out where. She did not start out where she ended up.”

As the Inquisitr previously reported, Girls’ Dunham is going to be appearing in Scandal Season 4. The Hollywood Reporter has posted a first look at Dunham in the episode, “It’s Good to Be Kink,” along with probable character details. Olivia will be dealing with a woman planning to reveal D.C.’s elite’s sex secrets, and the photos showing Dunham with Olivia and Quinn hint that she’s that woman. The actress also posted a photo of herself on Instagram from the set with Kerry Washington, with a caption that seems to confirm her character.

“Finally at liberty to reveal this pic of me on the #scandal set as ‘Kinky Sue,'” Dunham wrote.

Finally, E! News has revealed that Dan Bucatinsky (James) and Kate Burton (Sally Langston) will both be back in an upcoming Scandal episode. Before anyone can get too excited or start wondering if James is really dead, Bucatinsky is only going to be in Cyrus-centric flashbacks. There are no details yet about Burton’s return, but could the former VP mean trouble for Mellie’s dreams?

These two blasts from the past come pretty soon in Scandal Season 4 after Olivia received one herself, when Henry Ian Cusick returned as Stephen Finch and ended up winning her in the auction. Watch that scene below.

Scandal Season 4 airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.
