‘Once Upon A Time’ Spoilers: The Sorcerer And The Author, Emma’s Potential Darkness, And More

Once Upon a Time is back, and thanks to the midseason premiere, fans now know that there is a potential new villain in Storybrooke – and it’s not the person you might expect, especially considering the Queens of Darkness are around and Rumplestiltskin has found himself a way back in even though Belle banished him.

As the Inquisitr previously reported, there is potential for Emma to go dark, just like the promo for the show’s midseason return teased. At the end of the latest Once Upon a Time episode, Rumple revealed to Cruella and Ursula that even powerless, he managed to set the events in motion that led to their entry into – and his return to – Storybrooke. He was the one who sent Belle the translation they needed to free the fairies from the hat, which led to them also freeing the Chernabog, which went after the person with the greatest potential for darkness. While everyone (including Regina) assumed that person was Regina, Rumple revealed that the target was, in fact, Emma.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Eddy Kitsis has explained this is all part of exploring what makes heroes and villains.

“For us, what we really wanted to explore was if you’ve done a bad thing, can you come back from it? Can you become the person you want to be even if you didn’t start out that way? And vice versa. What makes a hero and what makes a villain from that point of view? That, to us, was really interesting instead of black and white, I’m good, you’re bad [or] I’m a villain and I’m coming here to do villain stuff.”

Kitsis also addressed Cruella’s power, which was seen in the midseason premiere. Her power of persuasion only works on animals, and in the middle of Once Upon a Time Season 4B, they will be showing her backstory. Entertainment Weekly also reported that executive producer Adam Horowitz has teased that the series will show why Ursula and Cruella haven’t been in Storybrooke. Rumple had to track them down and bring them to Storybrooke and then trust that they’d help him back across the border.

“That will speak to why these three, how they’re all connected and what they’re all after,” the EP said.

Right now, the whole gang isn’t back together just yet, but the promo for episode 413, “Unforgiven,” which you can watch below, shows that the others will reunite with Maleficent.

EW also shared some scoop on what’s coming next for Snow White and Charming. At the end of the latest Once Upon a Time episode, the two met with Ursula and Cruella to make sure that they’d keep secret what happened in their past, and Snow made sure the two knew that she would rip their hearts out if the truth comes out, especially if Emma finds out their secret. Based on what Kitsis had to say, however, it sounds like Emma will find out the truth at some point.

“For Emma right now, the two people she trusts most in her life are lying to her and she’s suppressing that, so finding that out will be kind of a bummer. Emma is going to have to confront her past in a lot of different ways.”

Also in the midseason premiere, Blue revealed that the Author and the Sorcerer are actually two different people, and that there may be clues as to the Author’s identity in the storybook. Kitsis addressed whether the Author could be the Sorcerer’s hostage for EW.

“It kind of feels that way. In the second half, that question will be answered, as well as we’ll meet the Author.”

Once Upon a Time Season 4 airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on ABC.
